Come meet some Whatcom County community members who lead work around Palliative Care, Advance Care Planning, End-of-life and After Death Care, locally, at the state level and nationally. This powerful panel of speakers live right here in Whatcom County! Learn what we are up to, get some valuable resources and have an opportunity to ask questions.
Advance Care Planning and End-of-Life Planning are essential processes that allow individuals to have a say in their medical care, reduce the burden on loved ones, improve the quality of care, and ensure that their values and preferences are respected throughout their healthcare journey. These planning processes promote a more compassionate and patient-centered approach to end-of-life care.
This event is a fundraiser for The Last Dance Caregiver Collective, a Whatcom county-based community caregiver collective supporting our community members facing end of life. Donations will be gathered at the door via cash or check made out to the Chuckunut Health Foundation with the memo “for Caregiver Collective.”
Panel includes:
Marie Eaton - Palliative Care Institute at WWU, Northwest Life Passages Coalition Founder and Board member for WA state Palliative Care and Hospice Organization.
Kate Massey - Northwest Regional Council (NWRC), Dementia Support Program.
Hilary Walker - PeaceHealth Advance Care Planning program, Co-chair WA Serious Illness Coalition and member of the WA state POLST task force and education committee.
Ashtyn Mott - PeaceHealth Inpatient/ED Palliative Care program
Mike Hilley - Whatcom EMS and state wide EMS trainer
Nancy Simmers - VSED Resources NW, Last Dance Caregiver Collaborative, End of Life Washington

Everyone Can Do Ballet!
This is a movement class designed to introduce participants to classical ballet as the basis for all Western dance forms, striving to improve mobility, balance, strength, and coordination. This will be a welcoming space for all to explore the creative limits of their body, breathe deeply as you awaken and engage neglected muscles, and achieve increasingly challenging personal goals. Whether it be increasing flexibility in your legs, or decreasing shoulder pain, dance can improve many aspects of health, both physical and mental. Let me be your guide as you (re)discover and nurture your inner dancer. Everyone can dance, many of us have just forgotten how.
Learning the fundamentals of ballet/dance is low impact and requires very little personal space. It is especially helpful for mobility and balance, both of which become harder to maintain as we age. All mobility levels are welcome as movements can be modified for seated and standing orientations. Instructed by Lacey Thompson.
Mondays, 3:30-4:30pm, starting November 27th. No charge. BSAC membership required. Sign up at the front desk.

Taste Buddies: A Recipe Club for All
Discuss food and cooking with like-minded folks who have a wide range of cooking experience, from virtual novices to people who’d rather not cook at all anymore. All topics are of interest, but the conversation usually returns to our main focus—freezer-friendly meals and main dishes for everyday. Each meeting has a single focus.
Fridays at 10:30am:
Topics for November-December: Holiday dishes; both traditional and non-traditional; preferably easy, quick, and not too expensive. Mains, sides, sauces, condiments, appetizers, snacks, desserts, and beverages.
RECIPE CONTEST: Starting November 1, we will be conducting a weekly recipe contest open to all BSAC members. The Recipe-of-the-Week will be posted in the lobby, with takeaway copies available. One winner a week, one winning entry per person. All entries will be edible for inclusion in a potential cookbook of BSAC members' favorites. Any type of recipe may be submitted but preference will be given to recipes that:
• You have personal experience making (please say so).
• Don’t use particularly expensive ingredients.
• Use a relatively small number of ingredients.
• Don’t require fancy appliances. For example, if the recipe is for a slow cooker, it can be converted to a stovetop or oven method.
• If relevant, are freezer-friendly; ie. they look and taste at least as good after reheating from the freezer or can be frozen uncooked for cooking later.
