FOLLOWING KIDDUSH

A PRESENTATION BY OREN KESSLER

author of "Palestine 1936"

In 1936, the Holy Land erupted in a rebellion that targeted both the local Jewish community and the British Mandate that for two decades had midwifed the Zionist project. The Great Arab Revolt would last three years, cost thousands of lives—Jewish, British, and Arab—and cast the trajectory for the Middle East conflict ever since. Yet incredibly, no history of this seminal, formative first “Intifada” has ever been published for a general audience.

This is the story of two national movements and the first sustained confrontation between them. The rebellion was Arab, but the Zionist counter-rebellion—the Jews’ military, economic, and psychological transformation—is a vital, overlooked element in the chronicle of how most of Mandate Palestine became the State of Israel.

Today, eight decades on, the revolt’s legacy endures. Based on extensive archival research on three continents and in three languages, Palestine 1936 is the origin story of the world’s most intractable conflict, revealing world-changing events through extraordinary individuals on all sides: their loves and their hatreds, their deepest fears and their profoundest hopes.

Oren Kessler is a journalist and analyst based in Tel Aviv and New York. Previously, he was deputy director for research at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies in Washington, Middle East research fellow at the Henry Jackson Society in London, Arab affairs correspondent for The Jerusalem Post and an editor and translator at Haaretz. Palestine 1936 is his first book

WALKING FOR THE RELEASE OF THE HOSTAGES HELD BY HAMAS -

Michelle Sarna, who with her husband, Rabbi Yehuda Sarna, leads the NYU-Bronfman Center has organized the students and local community in a walk around Washington Square Park and Union Square Park to help bring awareness to the plight of the hostages being held in Gaza and to show support for the people of Israel. We coordinate with the local police who usually accompany us so as to avoid any hostile confrontations.

This Shabbat we meet at 2:30 PM in front of the Bronfman Center (7 East 10th Street) and carry posters as we walk around Washington Square Park, then Union Square Park, and finish with words and prayers.

The plan is for this to continue to be a weekly activity until all the hostages are freed. Please join us. עם ישראל חי

THE TIME TO PAY YOUR CSFA MEMBERSHIP DUES IS NOW!

July 15, 2025

19 Tammuz 5785

Dear CSFA Members and Friends:

5785 has been a great year for CSFA. At a time when Conservative synagogues are having difficulties, our membership continues to grow. More congregants than ever before are participating as service leaders and haftorah readers. I always seem to be writing to you about money, but I cannot stress enough how important members’ participation is to the health and welfare of our synagogue community.

As we approach Rosh Hashanah, I am reaching out to remind you of the importance of renewing your annual membership with CSFA. Your commitment and support are the bedrock of our vibrant community. Membership dues play a crucial role in sustaining our synagogue, enabling us to continue being a center for Jewish life and culture in our beloved neighborhood.

CSFA is more than just a place of worship; it is a haven for education, spiritual growth, and community bonding. Our synagogue offers a wide array of programs that cater to all ages and interests—from religious services, Torah study, Bar and Bat Mitzvah classes, conversion classes and Yiddish classes -- to social events, holiday celebrations, and, through our Chesed Committee, community service opportunities. These programs are essential in nurturing our Jewish identity, fostering a sense of belonging, and passing down our rich traditions to future generations.

Your membership dues directly support these activities, as well as the maintenance of our beautiful, but very old, synagogue building. We have begun the process of repairing and restoring our landmarked building façade. The Department of Buildings is reviewing our application, and we expect the work to begin before Rosh Hashanah. Your dues are critical to our being able to complete the work needed to maintain our physical sanctuary. Your dues also allow us to employ dedicated clergy and staff and provide critical support to those in need within our community. Without your generosity, many of these vital services and programs would not be possible.

In these challenging times, the strength and unity of our community are more important than ever. By renewing your membership, you are investing in the future of CSFA and ensuring that our synagogue remains a beacon of Jewish life and culture in Greenwich Village.

We deeply appreciate your continued support and look forward to sharing another year of growth, learning, and togetherness with you.

Sincerely,

Bob Reicher

President
