The Little Red Church in
Downtown Santa Cruz
| |
The beautiful University of California Santa Cruz campus is thriving in the redwood groves a short three miles away. In our bustling seaside community, you will find surfing, hiking, biking, swimming, fishing and sailing combined with arts, music, theater, lectures, international cuisine, and book stores. Settle in to a sidewalk bench with a cup of locally roasted coffee and chat with retirees, working professionals, students, street musicians, and outdoor citizens. The extraordinary environment surrounding Calvary is magical. (Calvary Profile)

Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in five Americans has been molested; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world’s foremost experts on trauma, has spent over three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust. He explores innovative treatments—from neurofeedback and meditation to sports, drama, and yoga—that offer new paths to recovery by activating the brain’s natural neuroplasticity. Based on Dr. van der Kolk’s own research and that of other leading specialists, The Body Keeps the Score exposes the tremendous power of our relationships both to hurt and to heal—and offers new hope for reclaiming lives.

Labyrinth Garden
Dates for Your Calendar
Sunday, October 6
Come for the Blessing of the Animals at the 10:30 service and stay for a special Coffee Hour hosted by the Labyrinth Project Team. This event marks the homestretch for the Labyrinth Garden Project! We’ll update everyone on the status of the project and especially on the details of the timeline, from excavation in mid-October through ribbon-cutting for the finished garden by Thanksgiving.
Saturday, October 26, 1:00-5:00 p.m.
Join us for the Labyrinth Community Build Day! Lars Howlett, the designer for our labyrinth, will lead us in laying the bricks for the lines of the labyrinth. Beneath the bricks, we’ll place notes with your prayers, hopes, dreams, thanksgivings, intercessions on them. You can even use a marker to write directly on the underside of the bricks you lay. Activities for children will also be featured. We’re inviting everyone in Santa Cruz to join us, and especially our immediate neighbors, so bring your friends and family members, too. Watch for more details in the coming weeks!
Don’t forget – Matching Gift for September Donations!
All donations to the Labyrinth Garden Project made in September will be matched one-to-one up to a total of $5,000 thanks to a generous donor. Make your donation count double! We are at 75% of our goal. You can donate online, or via the yellow outreach envelopes in the pews, or by mailing your check to Calvary. Thanks for your support!
For more information about the project, see the Labyrinth link on the Calvary website or contact Martha Dexter.
