COLLABORATION:
Inspiring “Outside the Box” Creativity
It all started with weaving CDs! I’ve woven a bunch, taught others how to weave them, and the more I wove, the more “what ifs” seemed to form in my head. My first “outside the box” CD creation was moving from a single woven CD to joining multiple CDs to form a 3D caterpillar on a canvas for my first grandson. After doing the caterpillar, I couldn’t stop imagining a butterfly made of CDs. I approached David about my idea (since the butterfly is often a symbol of new life/resurrection) and he was enthusiastic. My original imagining was a butterfly made entirely of cd’s glued to a canvas, like the caterpillar.
Here’s where the collaboration starts… brainstorming with David, DeSha, our energetic Parish Life & Children’s Program Minister, and Tinnin, enthusiastic friend, vestry member, and fellow grandmother, we planned a whole Lenten season of activity for the children to weave CDs to form a caterpillar who would grow over the weeks and eventually transform into a butterfly. We decided weaving a large butterfly completely out of CDs would have required too many CDs for the kids to weave and it would have been quite heavy to suspend, so we came up with the idea to make a wire frame for each of the wings and the body and the children would weave ribbons (the weft) on each “pre-warped” wing. CDs would form the body of the butterfly. The children would also make smaller butterflies, using coffee filters and doilies colored with washable markers, then sprayed with water to make the colors run. The bodies of those butterflies would be clothespins and also woven CDs.
The children diligently wove their CDs, the wings of the butterfly, and created the smaller butterflies.

Over the weeks, the caterpillar continued to grow along a tree branch which was suspended in the front of the church. It grew, and grew…
then became a chrysalis, …
… and then on Easter Sunday, the butterfly appeared!

The resulting butterflies – especially the big one -- were definitely an “outside of the box” creation since I had never specifically made something large to hang in a public place (I’ve made lots of woven wall hangings for my home and as gifts), but this challenged my brain and excited my creativity – all because of collaboration, brainstorming, teamwork!
From a church perspective, sharing my “God gift” of weaving with the kids was a real honor. Witnessing their enthusiasm weaving the CDs and butterfly wings was thrilling. Observing their interest and curiosity when listening to the stories during Godly Play made me wonder, will the caterpillar to butterfly weaving experience and understanding of the Jesus story during Lent stick with them and grow as they grow in their faith? And will the concepts of teamwork and collaboration such as they experienced during the weaving process help them feel and grow their love for each other – their church family?
