What do you love?
It's a Jesus question.
It's the kind of question that is meant to hook us back up to the fact that
we are all made in the image of a wildly creative, passionate and loving God.
It's a question that can restore us in the image of God - recreate us -
help us remember who we are under there...not what we DO.
What do you love?
It's a Lenten question too.
In the Gospels, Jesus meets lots of strangers but his opening line is never,
"What do you do?"
The Jesus questions are far more interesting.
Jesus opts for these unexpected zingers:
What do you think?
Who are you looking for?
What do you want me to do for you?
With what can we compare the Kingdom of God?
Why are you crying?
Why are you sleeping?
Why are you so afraid?
Jesus asks questions that tease out the raw and holy inside us.
Jesus is completely uninterested in the externals.
We students of Jesus are trying to learn how to ask like he did.
We are trying to learn to let go of the externals and get on to the good stuff -
the questions that lead us out toward
truth conversation (conversion) and transformation.
In these weeks of Lent, we will be taking up the Jesus questions intentionally as an entire community. What kind of transformation is happening – for all of us?
As your pastor, I give thanks to God for every one of you and for the ways that you bring the presence of Christ into our midst. And I give thanks to God for the ministry that we share and all that God will show us together in the days to come.
See you Sunday!
