Our Stewardship Season began on Sunday, October 2, and will continue until our Ingathering Sunday in November. Please pick up a pledge form in the narthex this Sunday and start a conversation.
When I was a little girl, I knew that Jesus loved me. There was a painting in our Sunday School room, with Jesus and the children. One of the children had her hand on Jesus’ knee. I knew that that little girl was me. I also knew that the adults in my church loved me, and that they were hovering in the wings of my life, to support me in safety and love.
I always look for a church that brings me that sense of love and belonging. Chapel of Our Saviour is it for me. When we pass the peace, when we break bread together, when we cry for the sadness of the world, when we bask in the joy of the world, we do it together.
I come to church for two things: to learn how to love God, and to learn how to love my neighbors. That’s it. Everything I need to know, I learn by being in church with my brothers and sisters. No other place in my life requires so much of me. It’s wonderful to support charities in our community, and I do, but church is different.
When we make a financial commitment to our beloved church, we are really making a commitment to Jesus and to each other. When I make my pledge, it connects me to the life of the church in a different way than when I cook or when I visit the sick. Of course, I need to continue to do those important things. But the three-legged stool of time, talent and treasure is strongest when all the legs are strong.
It has been a deeply spiritual practice to consider how I support our church and its life financially. Jesus had a lot to say about money and generosity because he knew that our giving connects us to the understanding that “all things come of thee O Lord, and of thine own, have we given thee.”
