This Week at Charlotte Lab School
|
|
Dear Lab Families,
Today was an amazing first day back from spring break! As I walked through both campuses, there was so much energy, enthusiasm, and joy for learning in the classrooms. It's clear that students and teachers are ready to make this last stretch before the end of the year really count, and they're off to a great start!
Looking ahead to next week, we have
a lot going on at Lab. It's Teacher Appreciation Week, Tech-Free Week, and students in grades 2-7 have MAP testing. Please note that
we WILL have school on Wednesday, May 1. Read the full enewsletter and consult the
Spring Testing Letter for more information and event details .
Please also be on the lookout this week for an email with a link to complete your
Intent to Return Form online. The information you provide is critical as we plan for next year, and forms are due by May 3. Thank you in advance for your cooperation and prompt responses! Finally, speaking of next year, you can now view the
2019-2020 Lab Academic Calendar on the school website. Check it out!
Sincerely,
Dr. Mary Moss

Innovation Fund Coming to a Close
|
Whew! It has been two busy weeks since we last shared an update on the Innovation Fund, and we are delighted to report that we exceeded our spring break target thanks to several wonderful gifts! As of today, we have raised $256,741! That means we are 86% of the way there and have just $43,259 to go toward our 300,000 goal!
We will be ending this year's campaign by May 15, so we hope that you will show your support if you have not done so already.
We need every family to participate with a gift at any level in the coming weeks. You can:
- Make a one-time or monthly donation on our website.
- Print our gift form and return it to the school with your donation or pledge, Attn: Susannah Lund.
- Become a Leadership Donor. We invite those families who are able to join our Collaborators Circle with a gift of $1,000 or more. Not only will you be part of a group of individuals who are leading the way financially to improve the lives of our students, you will also be invited to leadership donor programs and events throughout the year.
Thanks to everyone who has already made a gift to the 2019 Innovation Fund. If you already made a pledge, we hope you will consider making your gift by check no later than May 3 if you can. Stay tuned for our Campaign Closeout Challenge and an updated list of supporters in next week's enews.

Tech Free Week: April 29-May 3
|
We realize that our mission and model involve technology in a variety of different platforms throughout the school day; however, our goal is for our faculty, students, and parent community, to take this opportunity to “unplug” for the week. Our Leadership team reflected on our school calendar and due to the upcoming EOG’s and end of the year activities, this is an ideal week to go back to the basics and limit the amount of technology we all use each day. Teachers will be finding creative ways to limit the amount of technology used in their classrooms; therefore, we encourage you at home to also find ways for your children to "play" and "learn" without involving technology.
If you are interested in learning more about the impact of screen time and technology on our children, consider attending Families Managing Media (FMM)'s Parent Preview Night on May 16. Find out more and register
here.

The book fair is coming soon! For the week of May 6-10, we will need many volunteers to help students pick out and buy their books. Please help us make this a success by
signing up for a 2-hour shift. The more volunteers we have, the happier the kids (and parents!) will be with their book selections.
A Scholastic book fair flyer and class shopping schedule will be sent home in communication folders on Friday.

Wellness Week: May 6 - 10
|
This hectic time of year presents an opportunity slow down and focus on what wellness looks like on an individual as well as a community level. Each teacher will be given a wellness calendar for the week that consists of mindfulness activities, inspirational quotes, and specific activities focused on personal student wellness and mindset. We will be working with local organizations to provide donations and specific education around both physical and social-emotional health throughout the week. We would love for you to talk to your children about what personal wellness means to you and to encourage your children to reflect on what self-care looks like. Even at a young age, sleep, nutrition, connection, and physical activity are vital for overall physical and mental well-being.

Congratulations to the Lab Chess Team!
|
On March 30-31, 21 members of the Lab Chess Team competed in the NC Scholastic Chess Championship along with over 650 other scholastic chess players from across the state. Players played up to 7 rounds at two plus hours each to make for a very intensive weekend event. The competition was tough, but our team did a fantastic job staying mentally strong and doing their best. And the results: Every one of our players came away from the State Championship with some big wins. Several players took home individual awards and our school team earned multiple TEAM Trophies including:
- K-1: 8th Place
- K-5: 4th Place
- K-8 (U1200): 2nd Place
Way to go Lab Chess Team!

Plastics and Human Health
|
One of the most important things we can do for the planet AND our health is to reduce the use of plastic. The toll plastic takes on the environment is undeniable. According to the Center for Biological Diversity, plastic makes up about 40% of the world’s ocean surfaces. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch located off the coast of California is the largest ocean garbage site in the world, and is twice the size of Texas, with plastic pieces outnumbering sea life six to one. 1 million sea birds and 100,000 marine mammals are killed annually from plastic in our oceans. And this number is quickly rising.
