This Week at Charlotte Lab School
Dear Lab Family,

With the first trimester coming to a close, I know everyone is looking forward to an enjoyable and relaxing Thanksgiving Holiday. Amidst the holiday and widely recognized shopping days (Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday), we hope you’ll also mark your calendars for the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. Not only is it the beginning of the second trimester at school, it is also #GivingTuesday, which is a global movement to turn our attention away from the commercial side of the holidays and focus on how we can give back to our communities. This year, we hope you will join us in celebrating #GivingTuesday by helping us kick off our Lab Innovation Fund campaign at Charlotte Lab School.

The Lab Innovation Fund is our annual fundraising event, which helps raise money to supplement our operating budget each year. By launching our 2018/2019 Lab Innovation Fund on #GivingTuesday, we join a community that is dedicated to giving time, talent, and resources to support important causes throughout the world. Established in 2012 and celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving, #GivingTuesday is seen as the official beginning of the year-end giving season.

This year, we hope to raise $300,000 , which will provide essential funding for many of the programs and activities that make our school special and allow us to create a truly innovative learning environment. We depend on our families, friends, and community for their support so that we can accomplish our ambitious goals. Why does Lab need this additional financial support? Lab receives less than $7,000 per student from the state and county, yet we spend more than $9,000 per student. You can find out more about our Lab innovation Fund here .

There are even more reasons to participate in #GivingTuesday this year! Facebook and PayPal are teaming up to help nonprofits like ours raise money for our important work. Together, they will match up to $7 million in donations made to US nonprofits on Facebook on Tuesday, November 27, beginning at 8:00 am . (What does this mean? Donations to Lab will be matched up to $20,000 per donor and up to $250,000 per organization through this one-day program).

And here is how we need your help. Please show your support on #GivingTuesday by:

  • Setting up a fundraiser of your own on your Facebook page. It takes less than 2 minutes to do and is a great way to let your friends, family, and Facebook followers know about Lab school and invite them to support the school. Get started here and simply click Raise Money. I promise—it is easy to do!

  • Keeping your eyes open on Facebook for a friend or staff member who may already have a Lab Fundraiser and make a donation. We will post some options on the Lab Facebook page, too.

  • And, if you don’t use Facebook or social media—making a donation with a good old-fashioned check or credit card. You can find more information here; be sure to let us know if your company will match your gift.

By participating in #GivingTuesday —whether through Facebook or on your own—you will help us have a strong start to our 2017/2018 Lab Innovation Fund. Please feel free to contact me, or Susannah Lund , if you have any questions.

Thank you, as always, for your support.

Sincerely,

Dr. Mary Moss
Executive Director

Gratitude Beyond Thanksgiving
At Thanksgiving, we are given an opportunity to reflect and remember all of the good for which we should be grateful. It helps us refocus on what’s most important and to take stock of the positives in our lives, such as friends, family, health, and whatever good fortune we have. And, it causes us to look beyond ourselves and see the greater good. Adopting a gratitude-based mindset throughout the year, can provide many long-term positive benefits to the wellbeing of children and adults.  Read more.
