This Week at Charlotte Lab School
STAYING CONNECTED
One of our goals for the 2018-2019 school year is to streamline communication, making it easier for you as parents/guardians to access the information you need to stay current on school news and to keep up-to-date on what your child is learning in the classroom. There will be more info to share in the coming weeks, including this year's plans for SeeSaw and Google Classroom, but this week we are delighted to share the official launch of our new website !

I want to extend a huge thank you to volunteer, Trina Smith (2nd-grade mom), who designed the new website. Thanks to her hard work and guidance, we have a brand new, visually appealing, easy-to-navigate site. Check out the Parent Tab for all the information you need regarding lunch, transportation, events, and more! Our new News Tab features the latest announcements (and back issues of our enewsletter) as well as a snapshot of our social media activity.

I also want to highlight the importance of the students' Communication Folder (aka Green Folder). Students in K-3rd grades have a green (or blue) folder, and, new this year, students in 4th-7th grades will transport paper communication in their binders. Important correspondence from school will be sent home every Friday. And, this past Friday, Curriculum Guides went home for K-5th grades. If you haven't received your child's guide yet, please ask him/her to check his/her folder or binder. Curriculum Guides are an excellent resource for understanding what your child is learning in each subject area throughout the year. If you have questions about the Communication Folder process, see the "Lab News" section below for more information.

Lastly, I've included a few favorite pictures from week one. The 2018-2019 school year is off to a great start, and you can view even more of the action by following Lab on Instagram and Facebook !

Sincerely,

Dr. Mary Moss
Executive Director

LAB NEWS
Independence Day
This Friday, September 7 is Independence Day at the lower school, and this means that starting Friday, K-5 parents will not be able to walk their children into the building. We want our students to embrace their independence, so please start on any preparation you/your child needs to get them ready for this day. As a way to celebrate and recognize their independence, lower school students have a no uniform day Friday, and they are encouraged to wear red, white and blue.
Happy Birthday to You!
Parents are invited to celebrate their child's birthdays at school, and we ask that you follow these policies:
  • Parents may join their child for advisory and bring a small treat to share to celebrate their child's special day.
  • Birthday celebrations must be arranged IN ADVANCE with the child's advisor so that he/she knows when to expect you and can plan an alternative treat for those children who might not be able to enjoy what you bring.
  • All treats must be NUT-FREE

Place Your Lunch Order for Sept. 24 Oct. 5!

Lunch/Recess Change for 2nd-5th Grades
The new lunch menu has been a hit! 2 Guys N A Kitchen have been serving delicious meals that the students have been raving about!

So the good news is, the students are enjoying the new food. The bad news is, they need more time to eat it!

As a result, we have decided to extend the lunch and recess period back to the same length of time it was last year. These new times started today. Please note, although we added time to the lunch/recess block, we did not take any time away from the core instructional blocks. See revised times below.

Lower School Lunch with Your Child
Thank you to all parents who have given us a chance to make it through the first week before joining your child for lunch! Beginning this week, parents are invited to have lunch with their child. Please let your advisor know in advance.

Lowe School Lunch Times
K & 1st - 12:00 pm
2nd - 12:40 pm
3rd - 1:05 pm
4th - 12:15 pm
5th - 11:50 am
Middle School Transportation Update
We are exploring various options to help alleviate the length of the carpool line at the middle school. Read below for information on how your child can ride the bus between the Lower School and Middle School:

  • Morning: Want to drop all your Lab kids at the Lower School and have your middle schoolers ride the bus the rest of the way? No problem. Your child needs to be in the carpool area no later than 8:00 am to catch one of the buses.
  • Afternoon: For your middle schooler to ride the bus to the Lower School in the afternoon, you must put it in our transportation database and submit a Release without Guardian form. Buses arrive after lower school carpool is finished, and you may pick your child up by park and walk or by meeting them at a location other than Lab. We will not be running a second car pool at the Lower School.
Communication Folders AKA the Green Folders (but some of them are blue)
Your child’s Communication Folder is the method we use for K – 3rd grade students to send important communication between school and home. Students are expected to bring their folders home each afternoon and return them to school each morning. (You may find it easier to leave the folder in your child’s backpack after you look through it.)

Please use the folder to send correspondence, payments, permission forms, etc to school any day of the week. Each morning, your child will be asked to turn in anything that came from home and place his/her folder in the classroom bin. Each afternoon, your child should retrieve his/her folder and bring it home.

On Fridays, the school sends flyers, forms, school work, PTSO mailings, etc. home in the communication folder. Please be sure to check the folder each weekend and remove the flyers regularly.

New this year: 4th – 7th grades will not have Communication Folders. They will use their binders to bring flyers, payments, permission slips, etc. between school and home. Please remind your 4th-7th grader to be sure to share the flyers with you each week.

Thank you for your help with our ongoing efforts to improve communication.

Support Our Teachers' Classroom Projects
Thank you again for all of your generous donations!

Donors Choose Update: Ms. Scott's World Peace Game Project just got fully funded and items funded over the summer (including the Water Bottle Filler!!) will begin arriving this week. Check Instagram for updates! In the meantime, Mrs. Ward's project is just $43 away from completion!

  • Freeze Frame: Help Project Our Students to Success (Only $43 to Go!): Support the careers of future surgeons, engineers, mathematicians, and scientists! 7th grade students need a portable document camera to use for math instruction.
  • View all Lower School projects here and all Middle School projects here.

Organize Our Space Project Update: We want to thank all of the parents who donated bins for this project. The K-1st wing is complete, and Simplicity will be back at the end of September to work on the communal Quest space. If parents are still interested in donating bins, we have discovered that the two smaller sizes work best with our school’s design and space. View specifics and order here . Thank you again for all of your support with this initiative.
