DECEMBER 18 - IN THIS ISSUE
LAB INNOVATION FUND
As you know, we kicked off our annual fundraising for the Lab Innovation Fund last month on #GivingTuesday.

I am happy to report that we have had a strong start during this "quiet phase" of our fundraising campaign. We received more than $25,000 on #GivingTuesday (including $5,000 in matching funds), and our fiscal year-to-date total is $50,000 in gifts and pledges.

Beginning in January, we will officially launch the public phase of our Lab Innovation Fund. We depend on our family, friends, community, and private foundations to help fund many of the activities that make our school special and to provide an innovative learning environment. Why does Lab need this additional financial support? Lab receives less than $7,000 per student from the state and county; yet, we spend more than $9,000 per student. Gifts to this fund will are unrestricted and used to supplement our operating budget. This year, money raised will be directed toward technology, facility upgrades, staff development & retention, and more.

Although we will not formally kick off the public campaign until January, we know that some families would like to include Lab School in their year-end giving plans for this tax year and/or to take advantage of matching gifts in 2017. We welcome your support now or after the new year; all gifts made prior to June 30, 2018 will count towards our 2017/18 Lab Innovation Fund.  Regardless of the timing, you can make a gift in the following ways:
Every gift matters, and I hope that every family will show support by making an annual gift of any size to the Lab Innovation Fund.

Please feel free to contact me or Susannah Lund if you have any questions. And, stay-tuned for more information about our annual fund drive after the new year.

Have a great week.

Sincerely,

Mary Moss Brown

    MAP TESTING UPDATE
MAP testing for most students finished today. Any 2nd-5th grade student who was absent, or needs more time to complete the test, will do so after the break. Our 6th graders will have an opportunity to complete their tests before the break. All students will receive their MAP progress reports in January.
    STUDENT PORTRAITS
Once again, a huge thank you to Mandy French for taking our student portraits and class pictures. A few updates:
    • Every family received an email with a link to view digital proofs of you child's photos. The email was sent to the parent/guardian listed as the primary contact. If you did not receive this email, please contact Mandy French.
    • Mandy is providing a copy of the class picture to every student free of charge. Many of these photos went home in your child's green folder on Friday. The following classes have not yet received their class photos: King/Clark, Carter, Newswanger, Scott, and all of 6th grade. Those pictures will be coming after the break.
    • If you ordered prints through the school, they were sent home in your child's green folder on Friday, as well.

Earlier in the year, we shared news of the new Oasis Rooms at the Lower and Middle Schools for students and staff to have a place to be mindful and practice being or becoming calm. These rooms have been a big success, and we're looking for a few more small donations including stress balls and other small tactile items. Please contact Tracey Rosenberg if you are interested in making a donation.

The Staff Appreciation committee held the 3rd annual 'Thanksgiving Pie' event with great success! Thank you to the many parents who volunteered to bake or buy a pie. With your support, we were able to gift over 65 pies to our wonderful staff, bus drivers, and partners at UNCC. A special thank you to Rachel Hidalgo for leading the efforts, and to Kris Goldbach, Merritt Tise, Jaime Rentch, Kristen Allen, and Rafael Hidalgo for spending the morning collecting and boxing the pies.

Want your kids' candid picture in the yearbook? Have great photos from a school related activity? PLEASE upload it on the
ReplayIt app . Download the app once (you will need it as long as your child is registered at LAB School) and upload your photos as you take them. Please tag the children in the photos and their grades. And, don't worry! There is still time to order your yearbook here .

We have posted our December and January Lunch menus. Please note the change to Pizza Friday. While the new pizza lunch has been a hit, it is also a little more work than we had hoped, so we are going to scale back to once a month. Our caterer will still be providing pizza on Fridays; however, the Pizza Fundraiser (with pizza from Domino's or Papa John's) will now be the last Friday that we are in school each month.

We are so grateful to everyone who has donated items from our wish list. Teachers are still updating the list with current needs. Check out the items we still hope to receive, and see if there is anything that you are able to donate.

It is that time of year again. Come and check out the lost and found items waiting to be claimed near the front office. Don't forget to label all outerwear and water bottles. Please also take a look at the clothes that you have and make sure you don't have another student's clothes by accident. A few parents have mentioned missing clothing that is labeled; those blue hoodies tend to all look the same! All unclaimed items will be donated on December 20.
