This Week at Charlotte Lab School
Dear Lab Families,

I can hardly believe that there are only two school days left in 2018! As we look ahead to 2019, we are eager to share our fundraising plans for the remainder of the school year.

Last month, we kicked off the friends and family phase of our annual fundraising for the Lab Innovation Fund on #GivingTuesday. Beginning in January, we will officially launch the public phase of our Lab Innovation Fund, but we know that some families would like to include Lab School in their year-end giving plans for this tax year and/or to take advantage of matching gifts in 2018. We welcome your support now or after the new year; all gifts made prior to June 30, 2019 will count towards our 2018/19 Lab Innovation Fund. Regardless of the timing, you can make a gift in the following ways:

Every gift matters, and I hope that every family will show support by making an annual gift of any size to the Lab Innovation Fund.

Please feel free to contact me or Susannah Lund if you have any questions. And, stay-tuned for more information about our annual fund drive after the new year.

Have a great week, an amazing winter break, and a happy new year!

Sincerely,

Dr. Mary Moss
Executive Director

TOP STORIES
New After School Program to Replace TAPS in January - Register Today!
After almost 18 months together, TAPS and Lab are parting ways. Effective January 3, TAPS will no longer provide after school care at Lab. If you need after school care, please sign up for our new after school program, The Extra Mile, which will take over after school care on January 3. The Extra Mile will be led by Lab teachers and offer opportunities for STEAM activities, sports, and outdoor play. You must register with The Extra Mile for your child to attend.

Next Steps:
  • If you have an outstanding balance with TAPS, please settle up.
  • Review the flyer for program details and pricing. The Extra Mile will honor financial aid arrangements made for TAPS.
  • Register for The Extra Mile After School Program.
  • Note Pick-Up Changes: Beginning January 3, after school pick up will be from the student entrance at Lab Lower before 5:30 and through the carpool line after 5:30.
  • Find Out More: Visit Mr. Singh at the Lab Lower student entrance to ask questions and register on Thursday, December 20 or Friday, December 21 from 8:00 am to 10:00 am. If you are unable to make it to the dates above, feel free to email: rsingh@theextramilecharlotte.com
Parent Survey - Respond by December 19
As you know the role of parents is a critical one, and your insight, feedback, and suggestions help us plan ahead and make improvements in our curriculum, program, and structures. We need all parents to take this survey by December 19 so that we can use your input to inform our planning on the upcoming teacher workdays. The survey will only take a few minutes to complete. Thank you in advance for your continued support and partnership in helping us to fully realize the Charlotte Lab School vision.
Parking Reminder
It has come to our attention that many cars are violating parking procedures (and laws!) during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up at the Lower School. Please do not park on the loading ramp to UNCC, next to a no parking sign or on the grass. UNCC is a valued partner to Charlotte Lab. They generously make their space available for us for testing, art displays, classroom learning, the book fair, and more. In return, it is important that we are good neighbors.

Also, please do not double park in front of the building to drop your child off. Double parking on the city street is not safe for your child or for the school.

Mama Ricotta's Dining Night on January 7
The favorite Dining Night of the year is just around the corner! Join fellow Lab families at Mama Ricotta’s on Monday, January 7 to enjoy good food and company. Mama Ricotta’s (located at 601 S. Kings Drive) will donate a portion of sales back to the school. We hope to see you there!
MySchoolAnywhere Online Directory
The MySchoolAnywhere school directory will go live this week! This directory will give you the ability to:
  • search for a class list by Homeroom Teacher (for Lower School) and by Advisory (for Middle School);
  • gain access to directory information from any browser or smartphone; and
  • find faculty, parents and/or students by name.

ACTION REQUIRED BY ALL FAMILIES: You will receive a personalized link via email from MySchoolAnywhere over the next few days. Please be sure to check your junk/spam mail. Specific instructions will be included in that email on how to access to the directory. You will also receive a temporary password in this email as well as instructions on how to change your password once you login. If you would like to access the directory from your mobile phone, detailed instructions will be included for this, too.

Check Your Lunch Account
Please bring your child’s lunch account to good standing before signing off for the holidays. If you are not current, you should have received at least one email from lunch@charlottelabschool.org
We will be publishing a new order template for January - June very soon.
Claim Your Lost & Found Items!
We have many unlabeled coats, sweaters, water bottles, hats, pants(!), lunch boxes, and more in Lost and Found. Anything left at the end of day on December 19 will be donated.
Artsonia: Online Art Museum
Welcome parents to your child’s own art gallery! Artsonia is a student-safe and protected website that allows your art teachers to upload student work. There, you will be able to view, comment, start a fan club, and purchase your child’s work. Each child will be given a screen name that can be searched for and all of their work will appear.

What we need from you:
Within the next few weeks, all parents of students who are taking Art this trimester (Salas, Guerrero, Salamanca, Najenson, Hedrick & Torres homerooms) will receive an email from the site giving permission for their child’s work to be uploaded. Once you have followed the directions, your task is completed and the art teacher will submit all work.

No personal information (including last names) will be given on the website. Artsonia is COPPA compliant and fully supports schools' FERPA compliance.
Don't Forget Those BoxTops!
Don’t forget to save your BoxTops over the holiday season and ask family, friends, and neighbors to do the same! The homeroom who brings in the most will earn a pizza party at the end of Trimester 2.
Teacher Wishlist
If you are looking to treat your child's teacher to something special this holiday season, don't forget to check the Lab Staff Wishlist for ideas. The middle school in particular is hoping for a donation of a coffee maker to use at open houses, PTSO general meetings, students’ holiday parties for hot cocoa, and many other events!

Keep Holiday Stress in Check
Holiday season is in full swing. As beautiful and magical as the holiday season is, it also comes with stress. We’re shopping, wrapping, entertaining, being entertained, while dealing with traffic, family, travel and the weather. Most of us, at this time of the year, tend to prioritize everything EXCEPT ourselves. This, ultimately, mounts on the stress and can hinder our ability to really enjoy the fun of the season! To keep the stress down, follow these tips.
