This Week at Charlotte Lab School
|
|
REMINDER: NO SCHOOL MONDAY AND TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 18-19!
|
|
Dear Lab Families,
Last week, Mr. Singh and I welcomed over 40 parents to the first
Lab High School Planning Forum where we shared the inspiration and concept for the high school. Afterward, parents gathered in groups to spend time discussing the attributes of a Lab High School graduate and defining success for the Class of 2026.
How will a Lab graduate think, communicate and act? And, how will our vision for our graduates shape the high school that we create?
The answers to these questions will guide our next steps in the high school planning process, helping us to imagine a new model for high school that will prepare our students for success in college and career in the 21st century.
If you were unable to attend the forum, I encourage you to review the
presentation online and
sign up here if you are interested in getting involved. We truly value your input and support as we embark on this exciting next stage in Lab's development!
Sincerely,
Dr. Mary Moss
Executive Director

Congrats to the Fifth Grade Boys Basketball Team
|
Charlotte Lab School's 5th grade boys basketball team recently capped off an undefeated regular season. The Lions finished the season as the #1 overall team with a perfect 8-0 record, scoring the most points in the 24-team InterFaith Basketball League that includes schools from the greater Charlotte region. Playoffs began last week and after receiving a first round bye, the Lions won their first two playoff games in dramatic fashion, both come-from-behind wins that advanced them to the Final Four. The Lions lost a close game last Friday evening in the semi-finals, showing the same heart they demonstrated all season long and fighting until the end. The players and parents appreciated the support of more than a dozen Lab faculty and administrators who were joined by their families to support the Lions in their final game. Coach Patrick Hill has done an incredible job with this group of boys during their inaugural season of competitive basketball, emphasizing teamwork, sportsmanship, grit, hustle, and playing unselfishly. Every member of this year's team scored a basket, and they showed everyone what it means to be a true team with how hard they played every single week. For a team that has never played organized sports together (and does not even have a gym!), we could not be more proud of the 5th grade boys basketball team for a truly memorable season.

In an effort to streamline our Green Folder/Communication process, we will now send just
one set of flyers home to each family, rather than send every flyer home with every child. Generally speaking, your youngest child will be the bearer of all things Green Folder. Of course, older children will still bring home grade and individual specific information, but school-wide notices will typically only go home with the youngest child in a family. Please remember to check your Green Folders (grades k-3) or binders (grades 4-7) to keep up to date on all things Lab!

Wisdom from a Five-Year-Old
|
Summer, my daughter Mirabelle just turned five, and I think many of us would agree, five is a practically perfect age for a human. When I took her to the first day of Summer Camp, she walked in there like a little peacock. She might as well have said, “I got this.” She didn’t complain or cry. She didn’t hang on to me.
I thought, whoa, this kid is brave. Totally confident. And I drove away and cried.
It was such an unbelievable moment to see how she’s her own person. I was thinking about how wisdom is everywhere, if we are willing to see it.
Read the full article for more wisdom from my favorite former five-year-old.
