This Week at Charlotte Lab School
Dear Lab Families,

I hope each of you had a relaxing and joyful winter break! Teachers returned to school today and we are all looking forward to welcoming our students back to school tomorrow morning. Usually, each enewsletter begins with a message from me, but new for 2019, we will begin periodically featuring other leadership team members so that you can get to know the Lab Leadership Team better. This week, Vikki-RoseTunick, our Head of Lower School and World Language Department Chair brings you an exciting announcement about our upcoming Multicultural Night on January 17.

Dr. Mary Moss
Executive Director
At Lab, it is part of our mission to prepare students for a global society and promote an appreciation for diversity, equity and inclusion within our community. We are fortunate to offer a World Languages & Cultural Studies curriculum for our students to participate in daily. We are so proud, not only of what the students are learning in their Spanish and Chinese classes, but of all the places visited, cultural experiences and traditions represented by each of our families and faculty members.

We have loved being able to celebrate diversity and culture each year, and we hope you will join us on Thursday, January 17 from 6:30 - 8:00pm at Charlotte Lab Lower School for our 3rd annual Multicultural Night! This is a whole school event and we encourage both lower and middle school families to attend and participate. This experience will allow you to get a taste of the cultures from around the world that are represented by members of our school and local community. There are two ways you can get involved:

  • Attend the Event: You and your family can take a self-guided tour through the stations prepared by Lab faculty, parents, and students, learn about cultures from around the world, and explore how we are influenced by our cultures. All Lab families are welcome to attend - please RSVP here!

  • Host a Table: If you wish to host a table featuring a culture, heritage, or travel experience, please sign up here or complete the form that was sent home in your child's green folder. Students are encouraged to participate with their families.

Please note that this event has previously taken place in the spring, but due to the number of events at that time of year, we have moved the event to January. Don’t miss it!

Want to join the planning committee? Please reach out to Akua Carraway.
Parking Reminder
It has come to our attention that many cars are violating parking procedures (and laws!) during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up at the Lower School. Please do not park on the loading ramp to UNCC, next to a no parking sign or on the grass. UNCC is a valued partner to Charlotte Lab. They generously make their space available for us for testing, art displays, classroom learning, the book fair, and more. In return, it is important that we are good neighbors.

Also, please do not double park in front of the building to drop your child off. Double parking on the city street is not safe for your child or for the school.

Artsonia: Online Art Museum
Welcome parents to your child’s own art gallery! Artsonia is a student-safe and protected website that allows your art teachers to upload student work. There, you will be able to view, comment, start a fan club, and purchase your child’s work. Each child will be given a screen name that can be searched for and all of their work will appear.

What we need from you:
Within the next few weeks, all parents of students who are taking Art this trimester (Salas, Guerrero, Salamanca, Najenson, Hedrick & Torres homerooms) will receive an email from the site giving permission for their child’s work to be uploaded. Once you have followed the directions, your task is completed and the art teacher will submit all work.

No personal information (including last names) will be given on the website. Artsonia is COPPA compliant and fully supports schools' FERPA compliance.
Don't Forget Those BoxTops!
Don’t forget to bring in the BoxTops you saved over the holiday season! The homeroom who brings in the most will earn a pizza party at the end of Trimester 2.
