“The representational geometry of emotional states in the amygdala”

Daniel Salzman received his MD and PhD in neuroscience at Stanford University, where he performed his thesis research in the laboratory of Dr. Bill Newsome. His research as a graduate student established a causal link between the activity of neurons sensitive to the motion of visual stimuli and perceptual decision-making.

After graduating from Stanford in 1995, Dr. Salzman trained as a psychiatrist, also completing his internship and clinical residency at Stanford.

Following his clinical training, Dr. Salzman switched the focus of his research to target the neural basis of emotion and of interrelated cognitive processes. He was recruited as a junior faculty member to Columbia University in the now defunct Center for Neurobiology and Behavior, with an appointment also in the department of psychiatry. Dr. Salzman has remained at Columbia where he is professor of neuroscience and psychiatry and maintains an active research program using both animal models and humans to study emotion and cognition. He also is a psychiatrist at New York State Psychiatric Institute and a principal investigator at the Zuckerman Mind Behavior Institute.
