Educators’ Collaborative Lunch | Why your students are so upset about sex and gender: Navigating a changing culture in medical teaching

Date: Tuesday, Nov. 19

Time: Noon-1 p.m

Hybrid Meeting: Zoom / R112

Register here

Most medical education is framed in binary sex or gender categories (i.e., male/female, men/women). Current trainees grew up in a culture where expansiveness of gender identity and sexual orientation is more normalized. Because of this demographic shift, students are aware that binary sex/gender categories are limiting framings that exclude population subsets, leading to vocal student feedback that faculty should modify their teaching. However, faculty often struggle with how to respond. This workshop will provide practical ways to recognize exclusionary framings and how to adjust language to be more inclusive and accurate.

We will hear from former and current faculty on how they have navigated their career pathways through a panel discussion, followed by Q & A.

Participants then will have breakout group discussions and report back on key topics to include for future workshops and seminars on Late Career Transitions.
