With the potential government shutdown continuing, SNAP benefits are scheduled to be cut on October 31.

Christ Church is responding by organizing two important community efforts: a Canned Good Food Drive and preparations for our

Men’s Rotating Shelter program.

🛒 Canned Good Food Drive

We are collecting high-quality, shelf-stable, high-protein items to help feed families who may be affected by reduced assistance benefits.

Requested Items:

· Canned fish

· Canned chicken

· Shelf-stable milk

· Peanut butter

🏠 Men’s Rotating Shelter Preparation

As we prepare to welcome our shelter guests, we are collecting items to help provide warmth, comfort, and dignity.

Requested Items:

· Blankets, pillows, and sleeping bags

· Linens (extended twin or college dorm size. Regular twin sheets are too small for the cots)

· T-shirts and socks

· Warm coats

📍 Drop-off Location: Collection boxes are located in the back of the sanctuary.

Together, we can ensure that everyone in our community feels supported, cared for, and nourished.

Thank you for your generosity and compassion.

Donations to Fight Case Against ICE Illegal Arrest

Recently, ICE pulled over a car in New Brunswick and without any warrant broke the driver's passenger's windows and detained two men. This kind of egregious act by ICE is happening more and more frequently - cars forced to pull over to the side of the road and windows broken to arrest people who look like immigrants. We have hired an attorney to fight this case to release these two men and to pushback on ICE's rogue behavior. You can help us with this effort by sending donations to https://diresupport.org/donate/ . Please note in the memo that it is for DIRE - Broken windows case.

HOW YOU CAN HELP YOUR COMMUNITY

Elijah's Promise

Response to the SNAP Benefit Interruption

(Pictured above: Elijah's Promise Emergency Team Meeting)

The days ahead will be difficult and uncertain for many. People across New Jersey are feeling the pressure with SNAP benefits set to run out this Saturday.

That is why we are ramping up the number of meals we provide. Hunger doesn’t take a day off and neither will we.

We expect to serve a record number of people so we are expanding hours at the Soup Kitchen and sending E.P. On Wheels into the community with far more meals.

But we can’t do it without you! Time and time again, you have shown up. You have proven that when we stand together, we can meet any challenge.

Our game plan...

Expanding services during the federal shutdown

1)   The Soup Kitchen will also open on Sundays. We’re now operating seven days a week!

2)   EP On Wheels partners can receive 2x more meals to meet rising need at our 12 partner locations. (Chef Jairo and Chef Jay are on the move!)

3)   Emergency food packages will be available for pick up by partner case managers such as city governments, hospitals, social services and educational groups.

4)   Chef Curtis and his team are fully prepared to feed every person who comes to the Soup Kitchen.

5)   We will offer additional pantry items through our social services program.

Thank you to all our volunteers and supporters who make this possible!

Vestry Corner:

Key Topics from the

September 2025

Vestry Meeting

1. The vestry approved a Mission Statement Update process to start soon! Look for opportunities to participate in shaping a new mission statement that will help guide us into the Fourth Century! This work will also support our upcoming development of a Parish Profile and our discernment around our path moving forward.

2. We reviewed the exciting work being done by the Stewardship Committee and encourage all members to attend cottage meetings in the next few weeks. As part of our efforts to promote sensible Stewardship of our resources, we voted to pledge about $60,000 towards our Marks of Mission contribution to the diocese. This is a decrease from this year while still meeting about 80% of our asking.

3. Jonathan Clark shared updates from the various Discipleship Ministries, many of which continue to function smoothly. He and Daphne will meet soon to plan the discipleship offering for Advent. Look for updates in future weeks! We encourage all parishioners to participate in one or more discipleship endeavors, especially in this time of transition and discernment

Minutes of the July 2025 meeting can be found HERE.

Christ Church member, Anna Rose Gable, held a discussion of challenges facing Christ Church's undocumented neighbors. Click the button below to learn about various ways to get involved in efforts to provide relief.

Outreach ministries de-escalation training

We are thrilled to be hosting Karen Chasen and her team from Prepare, Inc. to return to New Brunswick for training on de-escalation and personal safety/defense for parishioners and friends involved in any homeless outreach efforts (not limited to the rotating shelter). The training is in two parts of ~3 hours each. This interactive training includes practicing verbal and physical techniques in a controlled setting. All costs have been covered by grants from Episcopal Community Services and Emerging Solutions.

The dates and locations are:

Session 1 at Christ Church, 5 Paterson St, Saturday 15 November, 12:30PM. Parking vouchers will be provided for the Church Street NBPA deck.

Session 2 at St. Peter the Apostle, 94 Somerset St, Saturday 22 November, 12:30PM. Limited parking is available in the rectory lot (down the driveway to the right of the church).

Please RSVP (to Jason Kaelber at interfaithrotatingshelter@gmail.com / 848 228 3620). You don't have to be a shelter volunteer to attend—the content is equally useful for folks doing other homeless outreach activities. We will be sending Karen some example scenarios of "hot" situations one might encounter, so if you have any ideas of situations that would be useful/interesting for discussion or practice, please send those with your RSVP!

This toolkit consolidates a wide range of resources in one place, making it a go-to destination for immigration information. While some resources focus on the Episcopal Church's response to the current situation, it also includes helpful links on topics like Family Preparedness and Know Your Rights, which are valuable to people of all faiths or none at all.

To stay updated on this ever-evolving issue and hear from knowledgeable

experts, a 30-minute weekly webinar is available. You can register here.
