Vestry Corner:

Key Topics from the September 2024

Vestry Meeting

1. In a wonderful way, the message from The Dwelling in the Word read and discussed during the Vestry meeting this month kept circling back into our discussion, The passage-Mark 8:27-38-where Jesus says to Peter, "Get behind me, Satan. For you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things."

2. Sheila Cooper led a discussion of the Stewardship Campaign which will have some familiar parts and some new ideas. Stay tuned for these events coming up in the next few weeks and culminates on Ingathering Sunday on October 27!

3. The Vestry reviewed the Budget process and discussed at length the Marks of Mission ask.

Minutes of the August 2024 meeting can be found HERE.

For Clergy

Clergy Formation: Book Study with the Bishop, Beginning October 8th

All diocesan clergy are invited to join Bishop French for a series of in-person gatherings beginning in October! On October 8th, November 12th, and December 10th, we’ll gather at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Spotswood to discuss the book Deliver Us From Evil: Church, Theology, and Deliverance Ministry (https://a.co/d/7290OBF). We’ll meet from 10 am until 11:30 am. In the winter and spring, we’ll have additional 3-month book studies hosted in the central and southern regions of the diocese, so everyone will have a chance to attend. For more information, please get in touch with the Reverend Canon Susanna Cates.

Fall Clergy Day: Tuesday, October 29th

Join Bishop French and your clergy colleagues for our Fall Clergy Day on Tuesday, October 29th. We’ll gather together at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church in Cherry Hill in the morning, enjoy light breakfast refreshments, a presentation, lunch, and worship together. Registration link is coming soon.

For Adults (Laity)

Diocesan Adult Confirmation and Faith Discovery Groups: Last Week to Sign Up!

Whether you’re new to the Episcopal Church and are seeking Confirmation, or a long-time member who wants to share and renew their faith, you are invited to join folks from around the diocese as we discover and re-discover our love for Christ, our joy in the Church, and the gifts that God has given each of us. This series of 10 1-hour Zoom classes began on Wednesday, September 25th at 7 pm, but it’s not too late to join us. Click here to register for the adult confirmation class.

How Do Episcopalians Read the Bible? A Diocesan Bible Study Class: Last Week to Sign Up! What IS Scripture? Who wrote it? Who decided what gets included? How are we supposed to read it? And WHY? This fall, join us for an exciting walk from Genesis through Revelation, with plenty of stops along the way for questions and reflection. This series of 7 one-hour classes began online via Zoom on Thursday, September 26th at 7 pm, but you can join us anytime. Click here to register for bible study.

Education for Ministry

Education for Ministry (EfM) is a 4-year program to deepen our understanding of Church and Scripture. Our diocese is blessed with two faithful leaders, the Rev. Margaret Otterburn and Donna Devlin, both of whom lead their groups via Zoom. Donna’s group meets on Thursday evenings from 6:30-9, and she can be contacted at sarahannb@aol.com. Mother Margaret’s group meets weekly, and she can be contacted at margaretotterburn@msn.com.

For Children and Youth

Our Fall Resources are here! Check out our page on the diocesan website for Dwelling in the Word, Creation Care activities, prayer resources, and more!

Diocesan Youth Canoe Trip Update:

Youth from the northern part of our diocese were invited to come along on a canoe adventure on the D&R Canal on Saturday, September 14th, and our intrepid explorers had a wonderful time! The Reverend Stephanie Shockley and her husband Dan led us on a beautiful trip down and back, with lots of wildlife and natural beauty to appreciate. We finished up with a delightful outdoor lunch and a conversation about our God-given resources. Many thanks to our Youth Missioner, Clare Gutwein, for organizing the event. Our next regional youth event is coming soon.

Questions about these and other formational resources, please reach out to Rev Canon Susanna Cates.

Join St. Alban’s online each Thursday evening from 7pm- 8pm for Prayer Meeting and Bible Study. St. Alban’s has encouraged the wider community to join us and many of the attendees come from different congregations locally as well as internationally.

We invite people to testify if they are prayerfully led and also encourage them to send their prayer requests in advance if they wish. Some attendees come prepared from time to time to not only testify, but to give a word of encouragement.

Please see the Zoom invitation below.
