Moreover, the only right stewardship is that which is tested by the rule of love. John Calvin
This Sunday is Dedication Sunday, when we will dedicate our financial pledges in support of FPC’s ministries to God as an act of worship. We often think about stewardship season solely as making pledges to meet the financial needs of our congregation’s ministries, but stewardship season is about so much more too. If our congregation had more money than we knew what to do with, we’d still do a stewardship campaign every year; because, to me, stewardship isn’t really about the budget—it’s about discipleship. It’s about committing anew to God’s call to give of our gifts, time, and resources for the work of God’s healing and peace in this world.
Herb Miller, a Methodist pastor has noted that, in the Bible, the word believe appears 273 times, pray 371 times, love appears 714 times…but give appears 2,172 times! From this, it’s clear that our call to give is ongoing—it may take different forms or amounts over time, but the call to give is always there. Giving is our way of showing gratitude to God for all the blessings we receive. Giving also helps us remember that all we have really belongs to God and this realization can transform the way we act as stewards of the resources God has entrusted to our care. Finally, giving is an important reminder in today’s world that money and possessions simply do not own or define us—we are first and foremost children of God through Christ.
I am particularly excited about this season as it is the first stewardship campaign as your pastor, but it is also my first opportunity to personally make a pledge to support the mission and vision of First Presbyterian Church. In just our first two months at FPC, we’ve been amazed at the work this church does within our walls, in our community and beyond. It is the generous giving of time, talent and treasures that make these vibrant ministries possible. I hope you will join Marie and I in supporting the mission and vision of First Presbyterian Church for the coming year!
Blessings,
Jim
The Rev. Dr. James E. Lunde
Senior Pastor

FPCB Western NC Hurricane Relief Update
We have been in contact with the Presbytery of Western NC to discern the best ways to assist the communities, especially the small communities. Two people in the Presbytery of Western NC have been appointed to organize assistance efforts. Julie Hester assists in distributing financial gifts to the areas most in need. Lance Perry connects work teams and individuals with construction and cleanup projects. Presbyterian Disaster Assistance is meeting with Salem Presbytery and The Presbytery of Western NC on October 31 to begin a plan for putting structures in place for teams to come serve. Members of our Mission Team will be in attendance. We look forward to seeing how the Spirit will move us to be the hands and feet of Christ in those areas. Please let Charlotte Nance-Allbright (callbright@fpcburlington.org) or Paul Reeves (paulreeves236@gmail.com) know if you want to be part of the work team. Your generous donations to the Western NC Hurricane Relief Fund have been sent to communities in need in Western NC as well as used to help create, make, process, and ship clean up buckets that will be used in Western NC. Thank you so much!

Thank You for Donating Hygiene Kits
Many thanks to all who gathered supplies and made hygiene kits for residents in western North Carolina. We were able to donate 62 kits to this relief effort. Our church’s collection has been sent on its way to the mountains through the Presbyterian Network of Churches. For those residents who lost so much, or everything, these basic essentials will make such a difference as they try to get back on their feet. Thank you for blessing them with your generosity !

Thursday November 7
-Friendsgiving gathering at Greg and Wendy Lunsford’s home, details to follow
And here's some info about our service project:
We are proposing that, in addition to making monetary donations to any of the sites noted in today’s E-Blast to address the immediate need for funds in Western NC, we as a group answer the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance call for Clean Up Buckets. We are proposing that the Salty Saints create these buckets as outlined at the PDA website and bring them to the Salty Saints Friendsgiving gathering at the Lunsford’s home on November 7th. We will then take the buckets to church for subsequent delivery to PDA and Western NC. Alternatively, the buckets can be delivered to the church, room #402 by November 7th. Donations to cover the $3.00 processing fee for each bucket will also be accepted.
The Presbyterian Disaster Assistance website with clean up bucket details is:

Memorial PW Service and Life Membership Ceremony
Presbyterian Women would like to extend an invitation to the congregation, our families, and friends to attend our annual Memorial Service and Life Membership Ceremony. The service and ceremony will be held on Monday, October 28, 2024 at 5:30 p.m. in the sanctuary, and they will be live streamed for those who are unable to attend in person. This annual service is an opportunity to recognize and honor the ladies in our church who have passed away during the past year. The PW will also recognize two women who have served our congregation faithfully with PW Honorary Life Memberships. Following the service and ceremony, Presbyterian Women will gather in the Witherspoon Room for a potluck supper. The Thank Offering will be collected at the dinner. The Thank Offering is collected every Fall to support national and international mission projects. Come join us for this beautiful service and opportunity for fellowship.

The Bereavement Team Needs Your Help!
Do you like to bake or provide snacks every once in a while? Would you be able to help periodically with a reception following a memorial service? Would you be willing to take the lead on a reception every once in a while?
There are SO MANY WAYS to help with taking care of our families who are mourning and celebrating the lives of their loved one.
There is no requirement of time/duties for this team. We are collecting names of folks (women OR men!) who would be willing to be contacted when we have bereavement needs. If you can't help that time, you just don't sign up! An easy way to volunteer at FPC.
If you are interested, please contact Carrie Tuttle ctuttle@fpcburlington.org.
More information will be coming soon!

We have a guide to help answer your questions. Also, serving in this role allows us to keep our staff person on the cameras. We appreciate your help in keeping our campus safe. Please review the available slots below and click on the button to sign up. Should you have questions, contact Leanna Giles at (336)214-5769 or leanna.giles@gmail.com.

Furniture Ministry
Saturday was a great day for the Furniture Ministry. Forty-four individuals showed up to deliver beds, linens, dressers, kitchen tables and chairs, sofas, upholstered chairs, lamps and end tables, as well as kitchen wares to nine families in need. Our church members lifted and carried furniture and boxes as well as cleaned upholstery, polished wood, sorted linens, assembled lamps and packed dishes. A big thank you to all who participated.
