This Week at First Pres! May 12 thru May 18
God of the
Cracked Pots

This week’s eNewsletter feature story
is written by Rev. Raymond Hylton,
FPCE senior pastor.

During a recent devotional time, the following story by Nicky Gumbel, founder of Alpha , encouraged me, and I pray it does the same for you:

A water-bearer in India had two large pots; both hung on the ends of a pole, which he carried across his neck. One of the pots had a crack in it while the other pot was perfect and always delivered a full portion of water. At the end of the long walk from the stream to the house, the cracked pot always arrived half full.

The poor cracked pot was ashamed of its own imperfection and miserable that it was able to accomplish only half of what it had been made to do. After two
years of what it perceived to be a bitter failure, it spoke to the water bearer one day by the stream:

“I am ashamed of myself, and I want to apologize to you. I have been able to deliver only half my load because this crack in my side causes water to leak out all the way back to your house. Because of my flaws, you have to do all of this work, and you don’t get full value from your efforts.”

Join us in lifting our voices in praise at the upcoming Hymn Sing on Sunday, May 19, at 4 pm, in the Sanctuary. We sing favorites old and new, joyfully responding to the words of the Apostle’s Creed. Contact for more information.

Please pray for the people of the Maldives, an island nation in the Indian Ocean. Pray for freedom of religion and the opportunity for those there to hear the gospel. Pray for the spread of the Scriptures translated in their language. Pray, too, that Christ would work in his power to free many Maldivians from drug addition, and that these healings would lead those who are set free to give their lives to him. In the spirit of Isaiah 42:1-4, pray for the growth of local churches and the spread of the gospel through their ministry.
Ramadan has begun! Please pray for Muslims during Ramadan as part of the 30 Days of Prayer for the Muslim World. Pick up a copy of the Muslim World Prayer Guide to pray daily for different Muslim countries and people groups. The guide offers daily prayers and information, coinciding with the annual Muslim period of fasting and prayer known as Ramadan, which runs May 6 through June 4 this year. Copies are available outside the Sanctuary and at the front desk. Join with Christians around the world as we seek God, asking Him to bring the light of Jesus Christ and hope of His atonement to the whole world. We are in the midst of the greatest turning of Muslims to Christ in 14 centuries of Muslim-Christian interaction. More than 80% of all the Muslim movements to Christ in history have occurred in the past two to three decades, a time period that coincides with the modern prayer movement for Muslims.
