Transition Reflections

Recently, Session spent time thinking about what we have learned from and valued about this season of transition. Some of the reflections included:

  • Noting how First Pres has become less clergy-focused and more congregationally- and Holy Spirit-driven
  • Our congregation communicates more effectively and kindly with one another
  • We have become more self-aware and confident when it comes to embracing our role as the hands and feet of Christ in our community. Rather than focusing on the challenges of being in the borough, we have embraced the possibilities that come with being part of this community.

Session members are eager to hear how you all have experienced this transition season. They would love to know what you hope to build on from this time in our history. To share your experiences, please take a moment to fill out this brief survey or email your thoughts to Elder Doug Sherman.

Wednesday Lunches

Our community lunches are such fun that we’ve decided to keep them going all summer long. Join us each Wednesday any time between 11:30-1:00 for delicious food and conversation. The main course is provided by a local caterer; if you are interested in providing salad, fruit, or dessert for an upcoming week, please contact Pastor Caroline.

West Chester Walking Tour

Due to the weather last weekend, the second walking tour was pushed back to this coming Saturday, July 16, and there are two open spots. This tour of West Chester will examine the town’s historic African American communities. It will be led by Penny Washington, a native of West Chester and published author.

Audio Amplifiers

The church has audio amplifiers available in the Sanctuary for anyone attending services. We have noticed an increased number of requests for these, and at the same time, our supply of 12 has dwindled to five. If one of these mistakenly made it home in a pocket or coat, please return to the church. We have ordered more amplifiers, although they will take at least a month to arrive and be connected. Thank you for your patience!

Youth Summer Trip

This week, our high school youth group is in Hilton Head, SC for a week-long conference called Fun in the Son. It’s a chance for our students to get away from the day-to-day pressures of their contexts and tune in to what God is speaking into their lives. Memories are made, bonds are formed, and lives are changed on trips like these. Please pray for our students and leaders as they make the 12-hour trek home on Friday, have a ton of fun, and seek to encounter our living and life-giving God this week!

Spiritual Connections

Study Group

Spiritual Connections continues on Monday, August 1 at 6:30 p.m. with the C.S. Lewis classic, Mere Christianity. Lewis, one of the most important writers of the 20th century, explores the common ground upon which all of those of Christian faith stand together. It compiles his legendary broadcasts during World War II from his previous books. All women are encouraged to join the discussion to consider this powerful assessment of the Christian faith. Meetings are first and third Mondays via Zoom at 6:30 p.m. unless conditions permit a hybrid gathering. Please obtain your own copy of the book. Contact Ellen Endslow with questions or to obtain the Zoom link.

New Sunday School Teachers Needed

We are looking for two new individuals to join the children's Sunday School teaching team this fall. These individuals do not need to be expert teachers but do need a willingness to explore God's stories and spend time in fellowship with children. Sunday School teachers serve approximately two Sundays a month during the 9:00 service and are resourced and supported by the Director of Faith Formation. Please contact Sara Pantazes for more information on this fun, Spirit-filled opportunity.

Sign-Up for Lunch and Discussion

on Gun Violence

All members of the First Pres community are invited to gather for lunch and discussion starting at 11:45 am this Sunday, July 17 to share our reflections on Common Ground: Talking about Gun Violence in America by Donald V. Gaffney. (Note that you do not need to have read the book to attend.) We will gather in Fellowship Hall and sandwich trays will be provided. If you are planning to attend, please let us know by signing up online. Contact Sara Pantazes with any questions.

The musical fun will continue this summer with the second annual Summer Music Camp from August 1 – 3. Sessions this year will include percussion, piano and singing along with fun games and snacks. This program is open to children ages 4 years – 5th grade. For families who are able, the registration fee is $35/child to help cover the cost of the professional musicians we are bringing in to work with the kids. Scholarships are available. Please register your children through the Sign-up tab on the church’s webpage or click the button below. Contact Sandor Kadar with any questions.

This summer, the front office will be covered by volunteers from 9am – 1pm, Monday through Thursday. Church staff will be on-site in addition to these hours, so if you need to access the building outside of the 9-1 window, please contact Pastor Caroline or the staff member with whom you will be working.

The Holy Indifference Prayer:

Dear God, Your will, nothing more, nothing else, nothing less. Amen.

This Week's Prayer Topic:

Pray for the Nominating Committee as it continues its work to call out leadership for elders, deacons and trustees – that our church will remain strong and focused on our mission and vision for First Pres.

The PNC has asked that we as a congregation pray for the Holy Spirit within them to:

1)    Give them energy,

2)    Clarity,

3)    Wisdom & discernment,

4)    Seek God’s will for our congregation, and

5)    Lead a person of God’s will to us.

Please make this an ongoing prayer throughout this transition period.

Each week we pray for our congregation at 12:00 p.m. on Thursdays. Set an alarm or schedule it in your calendar to join us! You don’t need to only pray for the topic of the week, but you can continue to pray for previous topics as well or anything that God lays on your heart.

Your copy should address 3 key questions: Who am I writing for? (Audience) Why should they care? (Benefit) What do I want them to do here? (Call-to-Action)

Create a great offer by adding words like "free" "personalized" "complimentary" or "customized." A sense of urgency often helps readers take an action, so think about inserting phrases like "for a limited time only" or "only 7 remaining"!
