Dear Friends,
You are some of the most generous people I know. You respond quickly and creatively to take care of each other. So when scammers prey on your kindness and generosity, I get angry. Instead of fuming, again, over this I want to be proactive about how we can continue to be compassionate together without being taken advantage of. Here’s what you need to know.
We have a Caring Hearts Fund that allows us to help friends and neighbors in need. It helps with a tank of gas, a few bags of groceries, or other tangible means of support. We can help someone by accessing this fund quickly, efficiently, and ethically. We may ask you to contribute to the fund in order to continue to carry out our ministry of compassion, but there are things we will not do:
- We will never ask you for gift cards.
- We will never insist on communicating by text or email because we are too busy to have an actual conversation with you.
- We will never insist that this is an emergency requiring your immediate response.
- We will never ask you to contribute in any other way than giving directly to the church on your own schedule from your own sense of generosity.
When someone contacts you pretending to be someone else, pressuring you into giving in ways that are not ethical, that is fraud and we will never ask that of you. It is why we have clear systems in place, like the Caring Hearts Fund so that you can give without being manipulated.
If you get a text from any church staff or church members and it seems fishy:
- Look closely at the phone number or email address; it is probably not that person’s real contact information.
- Contact the person another way using known contact information.
- Report it as a scam, mark it as spam, delete the message and/or block the number.
If you get an email from Pastor Scott requesting you to respond to the email, DO NOT RESPOND and report as spam, if possible.
In Peace,
FPC Staff

This series is designed with an in-depth reflection featuring centering quotations, questions, and opportunities for contemplation, and a short story will help you reflect on how the subject of advocacy touches your own lives.
This resource will use the Bible, our Confessions, and Presbyterian writings alongside resources from beyond our denomination to help us think about how God is calling us into action and reflection today.

Fifth Sunday after Epiphany
Scripture, Reflection, Response, and Prayer
Scripture:
Psalm 112:1-9 (10)
(The righteous) have distributed freely, they have given to the poor; their righteousness endures forever; their horn is exalted in honor. The wicked see it and are angry; they gnash their teeth and melt away; the desire of the wicked comes to nothing.
(vv. 9-10)
Reflection:
The psalm's concluding verse addresses the status of "the wicked," those who do not revere the Lord. Who are the wicked? They are the ones who do not trust in God and who do not live out their lives following God's commandments. We are not told that they are punished for not following the commandments. They see the life of the happy ones and are angry. Instead of fearing the Lord, the wicked ones are full of rage. They gnash their teeth. Their lives are miserable at best. The psalm ends with their miserable lives amounting to nothing.
ERIC TODD MYERS
Response:
What if we all are susceptible to being "the wicked"? When was a time you found yourself angry at people who were happy? Or "full of rage" because you felt miserable? How could following the psalmist's advice -- to trust in God and follow the commandments -- be useful advice to you on this front?
Prayer:
Merciful God, help me to transform my anger to compassion for my neighbor and for myself, and to turn my fear to generosity and freedom. Amen.

WEEKEND REFLECTIONS
FURTHER CONNECTION
I ask you to reach down inside of yourself, and find the truth your life is compelling you to see. That is your road to true peace, and it is the beginning of the evolution of humankind. Because every change in the world starts within. It begins with one individual who envisions his or her micro-universe the way it can be, and settles for nothing less. And as one individual moves towards the light, that light ignites more individual flames and eventually the revolutionary inner work becomes a transformative outer work that builds into a bonfire of light, the kind of light that can change the world. It starts from within, with one individual who seeks the way of peace. Will you be that person?
JOHN LEWIS (1940-2020),
ACROSS THAT BRIDGE:
A VISION FOR CHANGE AND THE FUTURE OF AMERICA
MAKING THE CONNECTIONS
Choose one or two questions for reflection:
- What connections have you noticed between this week's texts and other passages in Scripture?
- What connections have you made between this week's texts and the world beyond Scripture?
- What is God saying to your congregation in particular through this week's readings and commentaries?

SABBATH DAY
SCRIPTURE OF ASSURANCE
Thus says the Lord: Maintain justice, and do what is right, for soon my salvation will come, and my deliverance be revealed.
(Isaiah 56:1)
WEEKLY EXAMEN

Moving into a new year is always a time of celebration and excitement! Together let’s make some noise as we collect coins, bills and checks for the return of Noisy Cups for our church youth during the month of February. Beginning Sunday, February 1st, you are invited to grab a cup from the table in the Narthex, take it home with you to fill during the month, and then return it on February 22nd as we dedicate these special filled cups during worship that day.
All money raised during the month will go towards future mission-related projects and trips. More specific information will be announced at a later date. Thank you for supporting our youth as they seek to serve others within our own community and beyond!
GRAB YOUR NOISY CUP IN THE NARTHEX!
