Twenty-Third Sunday After Pentecost
Scripture, Reflection, Response, and Prayer
Scripture:
Isaiah 12 or Psalm 98
Sing praises to the LORD, for he has done gloriously;
let this be known in all the earth.
(Isaiah 12:5)
Let the floods clap their hands; let the hills sing together for joy at the presence of the LORD, for he is coming to judge the earth.
(Psalm 98:8)
Reflection:
In a time when oppressors grow stronger and genocide is part of the daily news, we must proclaim that a new day is coming....To do so is not to resign ourselves to the evil of this day while we wait for the glory of the next. To preach and pray eschatologically -- to sing of the day that is to come -- is to reassure the people of God (and the world) of God's future, but it is also a call to action in the present.
KIMBERLY BRACKEN LONG
Response:
What do you believe about God's kingdom, still to come? What is it like to reframe your perspective on the future from considering the next year or decade to considering the eschaton? How, for you or your community, might this result in a greater call to action in the present?
Prayer:
Ever-living God, surely you are my salvation; I will trust and will not be afraid. Amen.

WEEKEND REFLECTIONS
FURTHER CONNECTION
"But in the end, it's only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn't. They kept going, because they were holding on to something. That there is some good in this world, and it's worth fighting for.
SAMWISE GAMGEE,
IN THE MOVIE THE LORD OF THE RINGS,
THE TWO TOWERS
MAKING THE CONNECTIONS
Choose one or two questions for reflection:
- What connections have you noticed between this week's texts and other passages in Scripture?
- What connections have you made between this week's texts and the world beyond Scripture?
- What is God saying to your congregation in particular through this week's readings and commentaries?

SABBATH DAY
SCRIPTURE OF ASSURANCE
But I will hope continually, and will praise you yet more and more. My mouth will tell of your righteous acts, of your deeds of salvation all day long, though their number is past my knowledge.
(Psalm 71:14-15)
WEEKLY EXAMEN
- Take a quiet moment, seek out God's presence, and pray for the guidance of the Spirit.
- Consider the past week; recall specific moments and feelings that stand out to you.
- Choose one moment or feeling for deeper examination, thanksgiving, or repentance.
- Let go, breathe deeply, and invite Christ's love to surround and fill you in preparation for the week ahead.
- End with the Lord's Prayer.

This week, we name and celebrate folks in our congregation who are celebrating birthdays from November 10th through November 16th.

November Mission:
Frontera de Cristo
November's Mission of the Month is Frontera de Cristo. Through Frontera de Cristo, Mark and Miriam bring together people from both sides of the border, building relationships and understanding between them.
Presbyterian Mission Agency and Office of the General Assembly, concluded its engagement in numerous global missions in March 2025. PCA (USA) recognized the many years of service, ministry, and commitment of Mark and Miriam, who served so faithfully as mission co-workers. Their impact on the work of Christ across the world is immeasurable. Losing the financial resources of PCA could have been devastating to Mark and Miriam. Thankfully Presbytery de Cristo and the Presbytery of Grand Canyon stepped forward to call Mark Adams and Miriam Maldonado as Mission Co-Workers to serve with Frontera de Cristo in 2026. As a church and as individuals we now have an opportunity to provide for the continued growth of this vital ministry. Support for this ministry is more important than ever now that funding from PCA (USA) is gone.

The Des Moines Presbytery is sponsoring an immersion trip to Frontera de Cristo in Douglas, AZ November 15-21, 2025.
The Mission Committee will cover the trip cost ($850) for up to three people from our congregation to go, learn and share what they witness. There may be an additional cost for air fare. Contact Mission Committee Co-Chairs Deb Grunwald or Ben Lang for additional information.

| | This series invites participants to journey into the rich traditions of Celtic spirituality, exploring themes of creation, prayer, community, and pilgrimage. Drawing on scripture, Celtic saints, and spiritual practices, we will “walk the ancient paths” that continue to shape faith today. Each week we’ll take another step on this pilgrimage, discovering how the Celtic way invites us to encounter God in creation, in daily life, and along life’s journey. During the 9-week course the pastors will share photos, stories, and learnings from their Iona Abbey retreat in Scotland over their summer Sabbatical. | |
