We do a book study on Zoom on Tuesdays' at 4:00 PM.  No need to have the book or do anything ahead of time.  We will read during the class and discuss.  We have had some good discussions about passages of the Bible that we don't usually hear in church.

 Here is a thought for the week:

We must love them both: those who opinions we share and those whose opinions we reject. For both have labored in search for their truth and both have helped us in finding of our own.

Scripture, Reflection, Response, and Prayer

Scripture:

Psalm 30

As for me, I said in my prosperity,

"I shall never be oved."

By your favor, O Lord,

you had established me as a strong mountain;

you hid your face;

I was dismayed.

To you, O Lord, I cried,

ad to to the Lord I made supplication.

(30:6-8)

Reflection:

One can interpret this psalm simplistically; pray long enough and God will make everything all right. However, a more nuanced reading reveals a deeper theological meaning. The psalmist has learned to give thanks in times when God's presence is manifest and in times when the face of God his hidden (v.7), trusting that "weeping may linger for the night, but joy comes with the morning" (v.5). The psalmist testifies to the truth that even when trouble comes, people can hope, pray, and praise....Even in times of distress, the psalmist finds joy and offers praise to God.

DONNA GIVER-JOHNSTON

Response:

How do you relate to the psalmist? Does praise come easily to you? What s a difficult or troubling situation you face right now? Try to write a prayer or psalm of praise to God from the midst of distress.

Prayer:

O Lord my God, your anger is but for a moment but your favor is for a lifetime; my weeping may linger for the night, but joy will come in the morning. Amen.

WEEKEND REFLECTIONS

FURTHER CONNNECTION

This is what God's kingdom is like: a bunch of outcasts and oddballs gathered at a table, not because they are rich or worthy or good, but because they are hungry, because they said yes. And there's always room for more.

MAKING THE CONNECTIONS

Choose one or two questions for reflection:

  1. What connections have you noticed between this week's texts and other passages in Scripture?
  2. What connections have you made between this week's texts and the world beyond Scripture?
  3. What is God saying to your congregation in particular through this week's readings and commentaries?

SABBATH DAY

SCRIPTURE OF ASSURANCE

But speaking the truth in love, we must grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by every ligament with which it is equipped, as each part is working properly, promotes the body's growth in building itself up in love.

(Ephesians 4:15-16)

WEEKLY EXAMEN

  • Consider the past week; recall specific moments and feelings that stand out to you.
  • Choose one moment or feeling for deeper examination, thanksgiving, or repentance.
  • Let go, breathe deeply, and invite Christ's love to surround and fill you in preparation for the week ahead.
  • End with the Lord's Prayer.
