Upcoming Events
Thanksgiving Service
This year's Rochester Union Thanksgiving Service will be held at at Temple Sinai, 363 Penfield Road, at 11:00 on Thanksgiving Day. Rev. Celie will preach the sermon. The service is a tradition dating back more than 140 years, and is the longest-running interfaith collaboration of its kind in the country.
Cozy Night Supper
“Share the Wonder” at our Friday, November 27th COZY NIGHT SUPPER.  This program from 5:30 to 7:30 is the beginning of our exploration of the Unitarian Universalist sources.   If you find you can now add this to your Thanksgiving weekend plans, let us know you’ll be attending by contacting Kathy Russell  krussel6@frontiernet.net so we can plan appropriately. And for those who like to plan ahead… Future Cozy Friday Night Supper Dates exploring other sources are January 15th, February 26th and March 18th.

ROC the Day With Us!
This year, First Universalist of Rochester will be participating in ROC the Day on December 1st ("Giving Tuesday").  ROC the Day is a 24-hour, online event that provides people an opportunity to support non-for-profit organizations doing great work in the Rochester community, including First Universalist .  You can help us by getting the word out!

It's Holiday Shoppe Time!
Our Holiday Shoppe will be in full swing on Sundays through December 20.  Avoid the malls!  Stop by the table in the Clara Barton Lounge to find wonderful gifts, crafts, and baked goods.  Get your shopping done while helping to support our church.  Do you have items to donate for the Holiday Shoppe?  You can bring them to church any time. We are looking for items which are new and can be sold for $20 or less (“re-gifting” is encouraged!), as well as hand crafted items and baked goods. Contact Paula Marchese (pmarchese@rochester.rr.com) with any questions.
Additional Announcements
"I'M NOT RACIST... AM I?"   The Downtown United Presbyterian Church and MetroJustice are hosting a screening on Monday, November 23rd, 6:30pm-8:45pm at 121 North Fitzhugh Street. Free will donation to support the project. RSVP (text or voicemail), (585)469-8249 ogirafepm@aol.com.  Immediately following the documentary film is a facilitated workshop/conversation on race.  Because the film and conversation address sensitive issues and language both screenings are suggested for teens and adults. http://www.notracistmovie.com/

COMPASSION MEDITATION GROUP:  This informal exploration of compassion through meditation and other UU spiritual practices will be held for three Wednesdays leading up to the holidays - Nov. 11, Nov. 18, & Nov. 25, at 5:00 in the Sanctuary.  No RSVP required, but you are welcome to e-mail Rev. Celie to let her know you'll be coming (minister@uuroc.org).  No prior meditation experience required.

BOOK CLUB:  Join us on Sunday, November 29th at 12 noon in the Adult Lounge to discuss the book The Age of Miracles, by Karen Thompson Walker.  All are welcome!  See or e-mail Sarah Singal (ssingal@rochester.rr.com) or Shirley Bond (bondshirl@yahoo.com).

Bennuci’s Restaurant will donate 20% of your dining check to RAIHN.  Reservations suggested: 264-1300.

A WHOLE LOT OF CHANGE!  Our annual change drive brought in over $740 - Wow!!  Thanks to all who contributed, and a special thanks to Paula Marchese and Glenda Brayman for staffing the change table.

HAVE YOU NOTICED OUR NEW NAME TAGS?   The Membership Committee is in the process of replacing the badge holders on a string with ones that clip on.  The beautiful calligraphy on the tags is being done by Joy Lecesse and Kitty Forbush.  We will be removing the old name tags from the holder during November.  If you have not received your new one yet, please add your name to the “Make me a new name tag” list that is on the Greeter Table in the Clara Barton Lounge.  If you’d like to keep your old one, please take it home with you.  Thank you.

PREPARATION MEETING FOR REGIONALIZATION:  The St. Lawrence District Board invites you to hear about our regionalization plans.  The Board and our regional staff are facilitating meetings in our congregational clusters to tell you where we are with regionalization and to get your input.  This is to prepare our congregations, and their delegates, for the vote to dissolve our district in favor of our region, the Central East Region, at our upcoming District Assembly next spring.
First Universalist will host a cluster meeting on Saturday, Dec 5 at 1pm.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY: A temporary shelter, referred to as "REACH House" will run for six months this winter for men and women who are chronically homeless.  Besides financial support, REACH is looking for people to volunteer with day-to-day operation of the shelter.  REACH House welcomes groups, or individuals, willing to prepare meals, donate their time and serve the meals to the REACH House community of approximately 30 "guests."   If you are interested in joining a group from First Universalist Church to volunteer your time, and/or help prepare a meal, contact Carole Hoffman:  choffman002@rochester.rr.com.  More information about REACH and how to donate can be found in the December issue of "Our Outlook" or online at http://reachrochester.wix.com/reach

TRAVEL-SIZE TOILETRIES NEEDED:   Do you have a collection of toiletries from hotel stays?  Would you be willing to donate some to the REACH House?  The new shelter urgently needs travel-size shampoos, conditioners, toothbrushes, toothpaste, lotions, tissue packets, combs and brushes.  Please leave what you can in the REACH box in the Clara Barton Lounge any Sunday this month.  Thanks!

UNDIES SUNDAY:   The Homeless Task Force is asking for donations of underwear (mostly men, some women) for REACH House guests - any size/style (the men prefer boxers).  Must be NEW. To be donated ASAP - contact Lois Baum at KissaPawDaily@aol.com .

WORKING TVs WANTED:  Do you have a working TV that you could donate to First Universalist's RAIHN program?  Our RAIHN guests appreciate having the privacy of their own rooms, and a TV in their room can go a long way in making them feel at home, especially if they have young children who go to bed early.  If you can help, please let Marti Eggers or Sarah Singal know.  Thanks so much!

MITTEN TREE:  This year our church children will decorate the mitten tree on December 13th. Please bring in store bought or handmade or barely used mittens, gloves, scarves and hats to place either under the tree or just on the chancel floor to the right. All adult and children's sizes are needed. Donations following the 13th will still be gratefully accepted, until after Christmas. Stuffed animals cannot be used. Thanks in advance!
