10am Sunday Service: Christianity Without Beliefs

The United States is not a Christian Nation as so many of our friends on the right claim it is. But Christianity is nonetheless the religion which dominates our culture. Is it possible to be a devout Christian without believing in anything supernatural? Could Christianity be boiled down to a set of practices which make the world a better place.

Speaker: Peter House

Each Sunday ushers will have several large-print copies of the order of service available. If you would like one, please ask an usher.

Upcoming Events &
Additional Announcements

Tuesday, August 6 | Drop-In Discussion: How Diverse Are We?

We proclaim diversity but how diverse are we really these days? Sunday mornings have been described as the most segregated hour in America and this may be true about our Sunday services as well. If so, aren’t we being arrogant when claiming diversity as one of our virtues? William Elwell will present and lead our discussion. Drop-in Discussions meet via Zoom on Tuesday nights from 6:30-7:30pm. Look on the First Universalist homepage for details and a link, or click the Zoom meeting link in this blurb title!

Thursday, August 8 | Hybrid Self-Compassion Workshop

Many people struggle with being hard on themselves, especially if they grew up in conservative religious or authoritarian environments. Learning about self-compassion can help them become more resilient, improve relationships, and be kinder to themselves and others. Participants in this workshop will learn about what self-compassion is (and what it's not) and gain practical tools for practicing it. The workshop will be held from 7-8:30pm in the Clara Barton Lounge (and online) and led by Susanna Guarino, a Licensed Mental Health Counselor who specializes in working with individuals and couples with religious trauma.

Saturday, August 10| FPGROC volunteer session CANCELLED

Family Promise has CANCELLED the volunteer session for preparing apartments that was scheduled for this Saturday, August 10. The next volunteer session will be on Saturday, September 14. For more info, contact Chris DeGolyer at housingforall@uuroc.org.

September 13-15 | Membership Growth Consultant

Please save the dates of September 13-15 for a weekend-long workshop about membership growth led by Rev. Thom Belote, Membership Growth Consultant. Rev. Thom Belote is the editor of "The Growing Church" and has served two growing Unitarian Universalist congregations. Save the dates on your calendar, schedule to come soon!

Postcard Writing for the Election

Would you like to join First Universalist for postcard writing in preparation for the upcoming election? We will host ongoing postcard writing sessions on the first and third Sundays through October. Feel free to take the postcards home or stay and write them in the Clara Barton Lounge after Sunday Services on August 4 and 18, September 1 and 15, and October 6 and 20. The Center for Common Ground, a non-partisan organization based in Virginia, is sending postcards to Black and Indigenous people of color throughout the country to encourage them to vote. We provide the addresses, text, and stamps for the postcards. Every vote counts in this crucial election! Questions? Contact Barb Brody. Thank you for considering joining us in this important effort!

Joys & Sorrows

Please send your Joys and Sorrows to be read at our Sunday Worship service to JoysandSorrows@uuroc.org.

Note: When you email a joy or sorrow to us, you are giving us permission to read it aloud at our Sunday service and possibly publish it in this weekly email. Thank you!
