10:30am Sunday Service: The Odd Duck and the Growing Edge of Universalism

If boundaries are a container for care, how might we consider or reconsider our boundaries, expectations, and outreach in the light of "radical inclusivity?" What does it look like to be radically inclusive of neurodivergence in people of all ages? How might we prepare to nurture and serve them too?

Speaker: Rev. Michelle Yates

Masking in the First Universalist church building is now optional, please respect any distancing requests by fellow attendees. A mask-required section of the sanctuary is designated for those preferring to stay masked.

The first Community Concert of 2023 will take place January 29 at 4pm at First Universalist. The concert features the church’s historically significant 1908 pipe organ built by pioneering English organ-builder, Robert Hope-Jones. Held monthly at various churches around Rochester, upcoming concerts will be posted on the Eastman School of Music ‘Organ Events’ webpage.

Leadership Opportunities at UURoc

Submitted by the Nominating Committee

Are you looking for ways to be more involved in church leadership? Getting involved can help you connect with the church and its members/friends. The Nominating Committee is starting to identify candidates for open leadership positions for the 2023-2024 church year. Those positions are listed below. If you are a church member and interested in being considered as a candidate for these positions, or in learning more, please contact a member of the Nominating Committee at nomcom@uuroc.org. Current committee members are Janus Mary Jones, Bill Elwell, Dwight Montague, Janet Rothbein and Charles Courtsal.

Board Of Trustees: The Board of Trustees represents the congregation for setting church policies and for fiduciary responsibility with a view to sustaining the church for the long term. Two board seats will be open for three-year terms.

• Candidates must be members of the church and have been active in the congregation for at least a year.

Nominating Committee: This committee is responsible for recruiting qualified members for certain church leadership roles as described in the bylaws. Two positions will be open for two-year terms.

• Candidates must be members of the church and have been active in the congregation for at least two years.

Committee On Ministry: The COM is the committee that monitors how the minister, lay leaders, and congregation work together for the best possible fulfillment of the congregation’s mission and covenant. One position will be open for a three-year term.

• Candidates must be members of the church for at least three years.

EcoJustice

If you missed the drop-in discussion on Climate Solutions and regional strategy, email ecojustice@uuroc.org. You will receive slides and relevant links. Next EcoJustice meeting is February 5, 15 minutes after the end of the service, in the Chalice Room. All are welcome.

MOCHA is Back!

It has been heart-warming to see the Clara Barton Lounge all a-buzz after service on Sunday! Coffee hour provides a wonderful opportunity to make connections and grow relationships at First Universalist. Will you help make it happen? Starting in February, your MOCHA team (Kitty, Karl, and Nancy) will need your help. We will serve at coffee hour twice a month. We need YOU to step up and volunteer to help out on the other Sundays. There can be some

flexibility in dates...adjustments can be made as needed. Everything that you will need will be provided, including detailed instructions.

So grab a friend (it does help to have more than one person working) and sign up on the sheet on the refreshment table. It’s easy and fun, and if you did this even once each church year, it would be a wonderful service to our congregation. Unfortunately, if no one is able to help, there will be no coffee hour on that Sunday.

Thanks in advance for your help. If you can help, please contact mocha@uuroc.org.
