10:30am Sunday Service: Give Us This Day Our Daily Rest

How do we quantify rest? What if I seem to need more than you do to function at my best; to survive or even function? How do you know what kind of rest you need? How does our need for "rest" intersect with Disability Theology? How does "rest as resistance" inform our worldview when we recognize the inherent worth and dignity of people who need different kinds or amounts of rest?

Speaker: Rev. Michelle Yates

Masking in the First Universalist church building is now optional, please respect any distancing requests by fellow attendees. A mask-required section of the sanctuary is designated for those preferring to stay masked.

Sunday, January 7 | In-Church Drop-In Discussion: Living in a Science Fictional World

Friday, January 19, 6-8pm | Cozy Night Supper: Potluck and Discussion

We will explore our Seasonal Worship Theme of "Staying Soft". Families are welcome & don't need to bring food to contribute! Childcare provided if you RSVP by January 15. RSVP with what you intend to bring to Rev. Michelle at edu@uuroc.org or sign up in the Clara Barton Lounge.

Sunday, January 21, Noon-1:15pm | Welcoming Neurodivergent Children Video and Discussion Part II

Please join us to view, consider and discuss the second part of "Welcoming Neurodivergent Children," a webinar from the UUA. You don't have to have attended Part I to participate. Rev. Michelle will facilitate. This event will take place in our beautiful sanctuary.

Sunday, January 21 | January Social Justice Plate Offering

Our January Social Justice Plate Offering will be donated to REACH Advocacy. REACH is dedicated to working for more equitable housing policies and practices — committed to the belief that housing is a human right and working to see that this value informs the public dialogue around housing justice. Our congregation is a supporter of this organization, as they have been instrumental in providing emergency housing before, during and since the pandemic. They are working to construct a Tiny Homes Village and collaborate with other City programs to expand the provision of safe housing for all. We also believe, as they do, that housing is a human right. Please give generously to support their efforts.

Our Service Auction is February 4!

Donation forms will be available January 1. We need volunteers to help with lunch (bringing a big pot of soup, some bread, or cookies), set up, serving, and cleanup! Many hands make light work! Contact finance@uuroc.org if you can be part of the team. For more information click the button below!

First Universalist Winter Break

First Universalist is closed from Monday, Dec. 25 through Saturday, December 30. All virtual/home offices will be closed, and our staff will be off during this time. We will have our usual Sunday Service on Sunday, Dec. 31, but will be closed on New Year's Day.

We wish you and your loved ones the happiest of holidays and a peaceful New Year.

Joys & Sorrows

Please send your Joys and Sorrows to be read at our Sunday Worship service to JoysandSorrows@uuroc.org.

  • A Sorrow: Harriet Sutherland, a faithful member of our church before she moved to Ithaca, is now in the Friendly Home on East Avenue, suffering from some dementia. She is now totally deaf, so bring a notebook/iPad in order to communicate with her if you visit. Her husband Dick says she would love visits from her old First Universalist friends!

Note: When you email a joy or sorrow to us, you are giving us permission to read it aloud at our Sunday service and possibly publish it in this weekly email. Thank you!

To submit an item for 'This Week' at First Universalist
