10:30am Sunday Service: Seeds of Change: Risk & Gift

What do we risk as we practice collective care inside a market economy? If you've read Robin Wall Kimmerer’s words and hunger to weave this wisdom into your daily life, join us. With plants as our teachers, expect to laugh, cry, and come alive as we explore living in old and new ways! Bring a bag to bring home an abundance of seeds to sow more fruitful futures for all generations to come. Join us for deeper dialogue after coffee hour!

Speaker: Petra Page-Mann

After Coffee Hour Discussion with Petra Page Mann, at 12:15pm: Embodied Gift Economics: Principles & Practices Weaving Interdependent Webs: Let's TALK!

Bring your curiosities, questions, concerns & deep care for all beings. We don't pretend to have answers, and we do claim our hearts broken by the market economy can inspire humans to re-member gift culture. Come learn, share, long, and practice with us, as well as sow more fruitful futures together, for us all. Held in the back of the sanctuary and online at the same link as worship

Each Sunday, we will have several large-print copies of the order of service available. If you would like one, please ask an usher.

Staff Bonus Collection Ends December 7!

The staff at First Universalist is as hardworking and dedicated as they come! Once a year, church members and friends have the opportunity to show our appreciation in a special way: with a Holiday Bonus. This year we have 10 staff members. This is the last week we are accepting contributions. We must collect your donation by December 7 for the staff to receive your contribution by the holidays. It may be too late to mail a check so please donate online by using the “Donate” button at the bottom of the church’s home page (uuroc.org) or click here! Select “Staff Holiday Bonus” in the purpose selection box.

Tuesday, Nov. 25 | Drop-In Discussion: Railroad Trains: Real & Scale Models

Let’s discuss our relationships with trains and railroads, both real and scale models. How many of us have fond memories of taking train trips? How many of us have spent time playing with model trains? Let’s share our train-related stories and perhaps discuss why this nation doesn’t build more railroads instead of more highways. John Lukes will lead. Drop-in Discussions meet via Zoom on Tuesday nights from 6:30-7:30pm. Look on the First Universalist homepage for details and a link, or click the Zoom meeting link in this blurb title!

Thursday, Nov. 27 | Seed Swap at Back of Sanctuary

Bring some seeds that you may have extra of, to share and exchange. On this Sunday when our guest preacher is speaking about "gift culture," let's put it into practice. Please try to bring your seeds to share to the table at the back of the sanctuary, where Jamie Trostle will be, before service starts. We will have small envelopes to redistribute them after the service. Here's more information on Seed Swaps.

Sunday, Nov. 30 at 11am | Interfaith Thanksgiving Day Service

Rev. Eileen Casey-Campbell will be preaching at the annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Day Service hosted by Asbury First! This service is the longest running of its kind in the United States, having begun in the post-Civil War years. Let us join in the spirit of gratitude for the blessing of being able to worship as one, respecting our diverse traditions. All are welcome!

Nov. 23 to Dec. 21 | Homemade Holiday!

Share the joy of handmade gifts from our own talented congregants! Make it: Bring your creations (with suggested donation value) to the Clara Barton Lounge, Nov. 23–Dec. 21. Shop it: Find one-of-a-kind treasures on Sundays, Nov. 30–Dec. 21—This will help support our church’s social justice projects in the upcoming year. Gift it: Spread love by giving something unique!

Sunday, Dec. 7, 1:30-4:30pm | Open Listening for all, sponsored by the Rochester Theater Organ Society

On Sunday, Oct. 19, members of the Rochester Theater Organ Society will practice their favorite pieces on our Hope-Jones organ—just for fun! Usually performing on the Wurlitzer at the Rochester Museum & Science Center (currently under renovation), they’ll be playing at First Universalist instead. Bring your family and friends! Drop in anytime to listen, chat with organists, and enjoy this free event.

When our heart is in a holy place, it’s time to join the Alcove Team

Help bring bi-weekly blessings, boundaries, and safety to unhoused neighbors who are finding shelter in our alcove. Learn ways to connect with compassion and care. Contact Michael Scott or Adam Durand to find out more!

Sundays in November | Weekly Food Ingathering!

We will be gathering food for the Community Food Cupboard every Sunday in November to help with food insecurity in our community. Low-sodium non-perishable food, toiletries, paper products, and cash are always needed and appreciated! Let’s live into our UU values by donating generously to help feed folks in our community!

Sundays in November | EcoJustice Laundry Sale!

EcoJustice is selling plastic-free laundry powder and sheets at cost at the back of the Sanctuary on November 30. Count yourself as one of those eco-friendly people who are not adding to the 700 million plastic jugs that are dumped into landfills each year!
