This Week at Grace

ALL People Are a Part of the Vision
"I will pour out my spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions." ~Joel 2:28
The words of the prophet Joel in the verse above are the same words Peter speaks to the people following the Pentecost experience. On Saturday, the Grace UMC Church Council pondered these words as we met to dream and talk about our congregation's vision. What is striking about this scripture is the broad reach of God's vision for God's people. Notice that Joel says sons and daughters, old and young. What Joel foretells, and what Peter recalls, is that in God's kingdom ALL people are part of vision work.
This passage certainly has meaning here at Grace, as we gather together for worship each Sunday with people from many places in life. We may be different, but we all come to the same place for the same purpose: to experience God's generous welcome and to be a part of God's witness in this community. How we have accomplished this work has evolved over the life of this historic congregation, but what has remained the same is a desire to connect all of the congregation though ministries that enrich worship and provide witness in the world.
In the coming months, I along with your Church Council will be working diligently to help connect each person with ministries that will strengthen your faith and better our community. We will do this by organizing our ministries under vision areas (see below) to facilitate clearer processes and communication. We will also be working on creative ways to share the stories of ministry so that we can celebrate all that God is doing and invite others to become involved.
This is certainly exciting work. I hope you will join us in praying for this congregation and the ways the Holy Spirit will continue to speak to us all!
