Blessing the Dust
As we begin this season of Lent, I want to share with you a poem by artist, author and UM minister Jan Richardson. I hope to worship with you this evening at Grace UMC at 7:00 PM.

Blessing the Dust:
A Blessing for Ash Wednesday

All those days
you felt like dust,
like dirt,
as if all you had to do
was turn your face
toward the wind
and be scattered
to the four corners
or swept away
by the smallest breath
as insubstantial -

Did you not know
what the Holy One
can do with dust?

This is the day
we freely say
we are scorched.

This is the hour
we are marked
by what has made it
through the burning.

This is the moment
we ask for the blessing
that lives within
the ancient ashes,
that makes its home
inside the soil of
this sacred earth.

So let us be marked
not for sorrow.

And let us be marked
not for shame.

Let us be marked
not for false humility
or for thinking
we are less
than we are
but for claiming
what God can do
within the dust,
within the dirt,
within the stuff
of which the world
is made,
and the stars that blaze
in our bones,
and the galaxies that spiral
inside the smudge
we bear.

Ministry Spotlight

Join us as we bless the dust and give Lent a chance. We're looking to experience this season anew, afresh - beginning with our Ash Wednesday Worship Service, tonight, March 1st, 7pm in the Sanctuary.

Looking for a meaningful way to engage spiritually, intellectually and physically during Lent this year? Consider focusing on God's creation during Lent and walk on a spiritual journey connecting Jesus' footprints in the desert to our carbon footprints on earth.

The fast details will be distributed via weekly emails. Each weekly email will highlight one aspect of environmental sustainability to focus on and will include scripture readings, a devotional, suggestions for practical and personal action steps to take to reduce your environmental impact. You may also choose to participate in an optional community event at Candler School of Theology that furthers attention to the weekly focus.

To participate in this fast, email candlerkeepers at gmail.com

Friday, April 7th, 6:45p dinner + talk (Fish Fry) | 8pm concert
(new date)

How do we empathize; how do we mourn? How can we locate our own humanity in others? Through the story of the Little Match Girl and the biblical passion, our music persistently asks us to reach out to those in need.

A pre-performance talk will discuss issues of injustice and suffering directly and as they reveal themselves in the music. The rest of the program will include music by Renaissance composer Tomas Luis de Victoria and Baroque giant, Johann Sebasian Bach.

Please join us for what will be a profound and beautiful evening of music. ALL are welcome!
