Greenlee Student Ambassadors are the faces of the student body to prospective students and families visiting Iowa State. Ambassadors are also involved with large visit days, departmental events and college recruitment efforts. If you are looking for a leadership position on campus, this is a great opportunity to get involved and get paid!

- Complete or be enrolled in JL MC 201 by Spring 2020

Submit your work for Hearst Awards consideration
|
The Hearst Journalism Awards program awards scholarships to students for outstanding performance in college-level journalism, with matching grants to the students’ schools.
The 60th annual program offers up to $700,000 in awards and consists of five monthly writing competitions, two photojournalism competitions, one radio competition, two television competitions and four multimedia competitions – with championship finals in all divisions. It's a great resume builder and could be a networking opportunity if you advance to the next rounds.
The Greenlee School may submit two entrants' work per competition.
Multimedia I: Narrative Video Storytelling
(due by noon on Tuesday, Nov. 12)
- Entries consist of a story on any topic that is told through the medium of video for a digital audience.
- Judges will consider the uniqueness of presentation, how the work incorporates digital storytelling techniques and the impact and strength of the journalism produced.
- Entries may consist of a single video or up to three examples from a series related to a single topic.
- Entries are defined as a single piece of journalism executed essentially by one journalist. They may not include dramatization and must have been published on the web.
- The entry must have been produced and posted on the web between September 1, 2018 through November 18, 2019.

Enterprise Writing
(due by noon on Tuesday, Nov. 19)
- Entries consist of original reporting, including explanatory and investigative journalism, across any topic
- If from a series, one article of the series may be submitted but must be accompanies by not more than one page summarizing the remaining articles and describing resultant actions, if any.
- Sidebars subordinate in length and content to the article may be included.
- All articles must be disseminated in print or online or both from December 1, 2018 through December 2, 2019.

- P R 324X—Brand Storytelling 11/4 update: Times now announced in class schedule. Tues./Thurs. 11 a.m.-12:20 p.m. (JL MC 201 prerequisite)
- This class focuses on combining critical journalism skills with the persuasive tactics of public relations and advertising to help students learn to tell inspired brand stories. Students will be introduced to transmedia storytelling that tells compelling stories, which will be shared with and by diverse audiences. Today’s audiences are focused on trust and authenticity in the brands they interact with. Brand storytelling, with its roots in fact-based journalism, is how brands best relate to modern audiences. Throughout the course students will explore audiences’ relationships with brands to create meaningful and emotional connections through storytelling. Students will examine works of narrative non-fiction and persuasion, and apply those techniques to persuasive brand storytelling.

Fall 2019 PIE Testing Dates
Passing the Poynter Institute Exam (known in Greenlee as PIE) is a prerequisite for JL MC 201. The exam is offered as part of an online course, Iowa State University Language Primer Course Pack (Fall 2019), offered through Poynter's News University. Students must receive a score of 78 or above to pass the PIE.
Although you can work through the course and the practice drills from any browser,
you must take the exam in Hamilton Hall during a testing day for your score to count.
You can only take the exam once per testing date.

is recruiting freshmen, sophomores or juniors with an interest in research related to gender and politics for a new research opportunity with the Carrie Chapman Catt Center for Women and Politics. She is particularly interested in s
tudents in journalism, public relations, advertising, communication studies, political science, event management, women and gender studies, and speech communication.
Through this Vertically Integrated Project (VIP), students will have the opportunity to participate in original research focused on women and politics, get experience working with graduate students and faculty in a real-world team environment, and receive up to three credit hours in the Spring 2020 semester. After participating in the program for a semester, students may have the option to continue and help mentor new students in the program.

NewsTrain Digital Media Training - April 4, 2020
|
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Journalism and Mass Communication will host a low-cost journalism training on April 4, 2020. NewsTrain is a nationally-sponsored, one-day workshop designed for working journalists, professors and students. The skills journalists need are changing constantly. NewsTrain gives journalists and communicators those skills so they can go back to their classes, newsrooms, colleges or universities better prepared.
The day includes five sessions of topics specially selected by local journalists and designed to teach immediately usable skills, including:
- Using social media as powerful reporting tools,
- Storytelling on mobile: making smart choices,
- Becoming a verification ninja,
- Editing smarter video on your smartphone, with #MobileJournalism evangelist Geoff Roth, and
- Mining data for enterprise off any beat, with USA Today Senior Reporter Matt Wynn.
The early-bird rate of $75 includes two light meals. The first 20 registrants receive a free, yearlong, online subscription to The AP Stylebook.
Journalists, journalism educators and journalism students from diverse backgrounds are invited to apply for competitive scholarships, which cover their registration, by Feb. 19.

Iowa State Daily receives top honors at national convention
|

The Iowa State Daily took home top honors from the Associated Collegiate Press/College Media Association National College Media Convention, held Oct. 31 through Nov. 3 in Washington, D.C. Iowa State Daily staff and students were in attendance to collect the Pacemaker, the highest award given by the Associated Collegiate Press, along with Greenlee faculty. The Daily also received third place for the
College Media Association Pinnacle Award in addition to several awards for individuals.
