Resources to help with your internship search
Winter break is a great time to make progress toward finding that perfect internship to fulfill your 499A requirement. But we know the impact of COVID-19 on internships remains uncertain—a recent nationwide hiring-manager survey reported that 27% of employers are waiting until January to announce internship openings. So here’s what Greenlee and LAS are doing in the coming months to help you succeed in your internship:
  • We share internship opportunities on the Greenlee Internships group on LinkedIn. We also send an email roundup once a week when we have opportunities to share.
  • CyHire posts new experiential learning (internship) opportunities nearly every day. You can even automate your CyHire search to have relevant new positions emailed to you weekly. Here’s how.
  • We’re on-duty during the break. Make an appointment with the Greenlee internship coordinator, Juli Probasco-Sowers
  • Visit with the experts at LAS Career Services. They’re available during the break. Appointments are available in CyHire.
  • Greenlee is organizing an extra-large, virtual Spring 2021 Jump-Start Internship and Networking Fair on March 10-11, 2021 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Details coming soon.
  • We’ve posted a list of previous 499A internships for employer leads.
  • And we’ve installed a safety net. While we anticipate most students will secure an internship, we have a back-up plan if COVID-19 eliminates your options. If you’re graduating in 2021 but by mid-April are still struggling to secure an internship, make an appointment with your faculty adviser to discuss our COVID-19 accommodations. More details will be coming spring semester.
Revision to Greenlee School's Poynter Institute Exam requirement
Effective immediately, the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication no longer requires students to pass the Poynter Institute Exam (PIE) as a prerequisite for enrolling in JL MC 201: Reporting and Writing for the Mass Media. Students who did not pass the exam in prior semesters may enroll (or remain enrolled in JL MC 201) for spring 2021 if they meet the remaining prerequisites. While students no longer must pass a formal exam to enroll in this foundational course for Greenlee majors, the School remains committed to high standards in grammar and usage and will be incorporating additional language-proficiency lessons and refreshers within its curriculum. See a complete list of FAQs on our website. Contact Kelsie Poe (kpoe@iastate.edu) with additional questions.

Apply for scholarships in OneApp
Winter break is a great time to apply for scholarships. The Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication awards over $100,000 in scholarships to its students annually.

To be eligible, students must be enrolled full-time with a primary major in advertising, journalism and mass communication or public relations at the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication for the semester in which the scholarship is issued. Students are considered full-time during the semester for which they are enrolled in ADVRT, JL MC or P R 499A: Professional Media Internship.

To be considered for Greenlee School scholarships, students must submit the General and LAS College portions of the OneApp, including the five designated Greenlee School questions in the LAS application portion.

The Greenlee School scholarship selection committee will use the information available in OneApp as of the deadlines listed below.
  • Dec. 20, 2020: Revised deadline for FAFSA filing for priority consideration for financial aid.
  • March 1, 2021 (11:59 p.m.): Deadline for Fall 2021 current and transfer student scholarship applications.
Resource for external scholarship opportunities
There are lots of external scholarship opportunities (outside of Iowa State) available to help students pay for college, and we've compiled some of them in an easy format for you on our website. Check out opportunities for which you may be eligible.

Hearst Awards - plan ahead for spring competitions
The Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication encourages Greenlee students to submit their best published work for consideration in the 2021 Hearst Journalism Awards competition. The program features competitions throughout the year in writing, photojournalism, audio, television, and multimedia, and the winning students are awarded scholarships and networking opportunities. As a participating school, Greenlee selects the two entrants per competition. The competitions are open to undergraduate journalism majors. An exception to the journalism major rule is made for students entering the photojournalism competitions. Submissions must have been disseminated in professional or student media while the student was an undergraduate.

To apply, submit your best published work in the following categories to Deni Chamberlin at dcham@iastate.edu by noon on the deadlines listed below.

Apply now for Greenlee master's program!
The Greenlee master’s program is a 32-credit course of study culminating in a Master of Science (M.S.) degree in journalism and mass communication.
