Test your knowledge at our first-ever First Amendment Trivia Night, which will take place at the Iowa Newspaper Association/Iowa College Media Association Convention. Participate in teams. There will be prizes for the winners, and First Amendment swag for all! Part of the First Amendment Series, organized by Greenlee's First Amendment Committee.

Harlan Newspapers - Feb. 14
Join the Harlan Newspapers this summer as summer intern! The successful candidate will be excited to contribute their skills in news reporting, feature writing, photography, and layout and design. The Harlan Newspapers, a twice-weekly newspaper in western Iowa, has offered a summer internship for more than 40 years. This internship is paid and runs from approximately mid-May through early-August.

Iowa Cubs - Feb. 19
The Iowa Cubs are seeking qualified individuals to join their video team for the 2020 season. Interns produce broadcasts for the stadium video boards as well as the internet webcast and in-house close circuit feeds during the 98 games at Principal Park.
Interns arrive approximately one hour before game time to set up the four-camera operation. Interns rotate positions among camera operators, director, replay operator and graphics coordinator. These positions are mostly game-time only. Pay is $10 per hour. Academic credit is available. The Iowa Cubs have 70 home games starting April 14. They also host the 28-game high school state baseball tournament in late July.

Southeast Iowa Union - Feb. 25-26
The Southeast Iowa Union is a regional daily newspaper searching for its next rising star reporter to cover stories throughout southeast Iowa communities including Mount Pleasant, Fairfield and Washington, Iowa.
This is a
full-time employment position
that is available for May graduates, but we would love to talk with interested candidates no matter when you graduate so you may be considered for future openings. We are a part of a progressive employee-owned print and digital media company including our daily regional publication, as well as our parent company, The Gazette in Cedar Rapids.
You should be someone who is curious about our communities and residents and is as comfortable covering a city meeting as you are writing a great feature or diving into an in-depth story. You're able to work on multiple stories simultaneously and can jump between projects easily. You should be comfortable shooting video and still pictures and able to write a good cut line. You should enjoy trying new things. This is a full-time position with benefits including health, dental, vision, 401k, and participation in the employee stock ownership program. You should have an undergraduate degree in journalism, English, communications or a related course of study. You'll need a valid driver's license and a history of safe driving habits. EOE prescreening drug and background tests required.

Apply for Greenlee School scholarships, along with other scholarships available through Iowa State University, using

. You must complete the five designated Greenlee School questions in the LAS application portion of OneApp by the stated deadline to be considered for scholarships.
The Greenlee School scholarship selection committee will use the information available in OneApp as of
March 2, 2020 by 11:59 p.m.
for current undergraduate and transfer students.

Submit your work for Hearst Awards consideration
|
The Hearst Journalism Awards program awards scholarships to students for outstanding performance in college-level journalism, with matching grants to the students’ schools.
The 60th annual program offers up to $700,000 in awards and consists of five monthly writing competitions, two photojournalism competitions, one radio competition, two television competitions and four multimedia competitions – with championship finals in all divisions. It's a great resume builder and could be a networking opportunity if you advance to the next rounds.
The Greenlee School may submit two entrants' work per competition.
Television II News Guidelines
(due by noon Tuesday, Feb. 11)
- Entries must be based on coverage of breaking or developing news stories related to campus, community, national or international issues, sports, business, investigative, science, weather or other current newsworthy matters. Reports must have a hard news focus, regardless of subject. Each entry must consist of at least two reports totaling no more than ten minutes. The reports may be part of a longer newscast, but the entry itself is limited to ten minutes.
- Entries may be accompanied by multimedia versions of the reports entered as long as they were produced primarily by the entrant.
- All entries submitted must have been disseminated on air or online or both from September 1, 2018 through February 17, 2020.

Multimedia III - Digital News or Enterprise Story - Individual
(due by noon Tuesday, Feb. 25)
- Entries consist of individual reporting based on a single news event or enterprise or explanatory journalism around a newsworthy event or issue.
- Each entry must consist of at least three components that, together, tell the story.
- Components may include: writing, photographs, audio, video, graphics, data, emerging media and social media.
- Judges will consider the newsworthiness of the topic, range and execution of digital techniques employed and the quality of the journalism.
- Entries are defined as a single piece of journalism executed essentially by one journalist. They may not include dramatization and must have been published on the web.
- One project per entrant.
- The entry must have been produced and posted on the web between September 1, 2018 through March 2, 2020.

Open to all majors and all years, this fair connects relevant employers with students majoring in advertising, journalism, public relations and related fields. Student registration is not required.

Spring 2020 PIE Testing Dates
|
Passing the
Poynter Institute Exam (known in Greenlee as PIE)
is a prerequisite for JL MC 201. The exam is offered as part of an online course, Iowa State University Language Primer Course Pack (Spring 2020), offered through Poynter’s News University. Students must receive a score of 78% or above to pass the PIE.
Although you can work through the course and the practice drills from any browser, you must take the exam in Hamilton Hall during a testing day for your score to count. You can only take the exam once per testing date.
