Take the Political Compass Test
How in tune are you with your own personal political compass?

Fitting into the theme “Dare to Speak, Dare to Listen,” Olivia Petsche and Ryan Hurley worked together to utilize the popular The Political Compass test to create a visual of ISU students’ political alignments. Through this project, Petsche and Hurley hope to convey that although we live in a politically diverse climate, we are more alike than what the media portrays and the differences we do have should be celebrated.

Reflection on Student Press Freedom Day: Connor Barr
As part of #StudentPressFreedom day on Feb. 23, Mark Witherspoon, retired editorial advisor for the Iowa State Daily, and Kylee Haueter, Daily editor-in-chief, spoke about their experiences fighting for student press freedom. Students in JLMC497D First Amendment seminar attended the discussion and wrote blogs reflecting on what they heard.

Connor Bahr is a student at Iowa State University studying anthropology, French, and journalism and mass communication.

"To begin, Mr. Witherspoon said what is arguably the most important part of his presentation and the largest takeaway I had after listening to it: “Journalism is the greatest public service.” It’s a simple message, sure, but it is also so important for student journalists to hear. Journalism is a profession that has been romanticized and demonized through history, and having someone with a resumé like Mr. Witherspoon tell you that what you are doing is important is a great feeling."

Senior Teagan Gara selected to serve as a White House Next-Gen Leader

This inaugural group brings together young professionals from a wide variety of fields, all bound together by a passion for history, civics and education, for a year-long fellowship.

"To be able to serve as a Next-Gen Leadership Ambassador for the White House Historical Association is truly one of my greatest accomplishments. To be honest, I was completely shocked at the news as I did not know I was even being considered! To be able to have the opportunity to work with some great leaders from across the U.S. to continue the Association's mission is very exciting, and I cannot wait for this upcoming year! Greenlee has truly given me so many opportunities that I could have never imagined. The professors, staff and the classes I have taken have truly provided me with the experience and skills needed to bring my best to this position," Gara said.

Gara is currently working for the Carrie Chapman Catt Center for Women and Politics and received the 2020 Hugh Sidey scholarship through the White House Historical Association.

In the future, she looks to expand her interests in both journalism and political science by working with various organizations and nonprofits.
