The virtual Jump-Start Internship & Networking Fair helps students majoring in advertising, journalism and mass communication, public relations and related fields to build their personal network of local and regional employers and learn about internship and job opportunities.

Hosted by the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication in collaboration with LAS Career Services, this boutique-style fair takes place each fall and spring and connects relevant employers with students who are preparing for careers in advertising, journalism, public relations and related fields.

It's Personal: What Recent U.S. Supreme Court Decisions Mean for Individual Liberties

Recent decisions by the U.S. Supreme Court have altered Americans understanding of privacy, freedom of religion and personal liberties. An expert panel will discuss the immediate legal effects and how other personal freedoms could be affected by upcoming cases.

Moderator:

Karen Kedrowski is director of the Carrie Chapman Catt Center for Women and Politics and professor of political science at Iowa State. She was recently named Campus Champion of the Year by the Andrew Goodman Foundation in recognition for her student voter engagement work.

• Julie Roosa, J.D., is a lecturer in the Iowa State Department of Political Science where she teaches law and politics. She previously served as an adjunct assistant professor and the First Amendment Specialist at the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication for four years. Roosa is a consultant on legal issues related to the First Amendment, and has taught classes in media law, First Amendment law, business law, constitutional law and criminal law.

BREAKING NEWS! panel Sept. 28

Distinguished Professor Michael Bugeja will be participating on the "Local Media on Life Support" panel on Sept. 28 from 6:30-8 p.m. in the Ames Public Library. Representatives from local radio and print media, ISU professor of journalism and community public relations officer will discuss the decline in local media and its impact on our community and ultimately on our democracy. They will discuss the problems faced and possible solutions. Sponsored by the League of Women Voters Ames and Story County and the Ames Public Library.

PR Professional Networking Roundtable

You are invited to a PR Professional Networking Roundtable event on Tuesday, Oct, 18, 2022, from 9-10:45 a.m. The event is part of the Advertising/PR Learning Community and is being opened to all Greenlee students and students in Greenlee classes. 

The event will kick off at 9 a.m. with a FREE breakfast buffet and time to begin networking with the PR professionals and Greenlee faculty. At 9:30 a.m. the event will officially kick off with professional introductions and remarks. Then from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. the professionals will move from table to table to answer questions, ask questions, talk about their career and career path and more.

The event is limited to 60 students, so register soon. Registration closes on Friday, Oct. 7 at 11:59 a.m.

Two students needed to record lecture

The local chapter of Phi Beta Sigma, a historically African-American fraternity, is sponsoring an educational lecture presentation about Thomas Montgomery Gregory, a Black WWl veteran stationed at Fort Des Moines. The lecture will be done by his daughter, Shelia Gregory Thomas, an educator and former educational children’s TV host in the Washington, D.C. area (https://www.thehistorymakers.org/biography/sheila-gregory-thomas).

The lecture is open to the public and will be held at the Fort Des Moines Museum on Oct. 15.

There will be a question-and-answer section and reception afterwards.

Phi Beta Sigma is looking to see if some students are interested in recording the event; they need two students to work two cameras, with audio equipment provided. Phi Beta Sigma has committed to a $75 gift per student, and the students are welcome to stay for the reception meal as well. 

Dr. Keith King is the representative of Phi Beta Sigma for this event—King earned his Ph.D. at Iowa State, and thought this event would be a good way for some Greenlee students interested in video production to add to their portfolio.

The Wall Street Journal opens applications for new WSJ Finance Reporting Fellowship

The Wall Street Journal recently announced the creation of the WSJ Finance Reporting Fellowship, a training program that aims to develop early career journalists with an interest in covering financial markets and personal finance. 

The 12-month fellowship, offered in partnership with the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) and The City University of New York’s (CUNY) Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism, is open to journalists with one to three years of paid newsroom experience who want to cover markets or personal finance.

Two journalists will be selected for the inaugural session, which runs from January to December of 2023. Journalists of underrepresented communities are especially encouraged to apply.   

Applicants to the WSJ Finance Reporting Fellowship should submit their completed applications by Oct. 24, 2022.

Interested young journalists with less than one year paid newsroom experience are encouraged to apply for the Journal’s paid internship program.

La Jolla Mom Communications Scholarship

• Amount: $500 awarded to one recipient
• Application Deadline: Oct. 14, 2022
• Announcement Date: Oct. 28, 2022
• Recurring: Bi-annual

Eligibility: Be a high school senior or graduate, or current college undergraduate or graduate student.

Applicants must be enrolled in undergraduate communication or related field degree program at an accredited college in the United States OR a graduating high school senior who has plans to study communications or related fields.  

Be a U.S. citizen or permanent legal resident.         

Proof of acceptance to his or her college or university or a college transcript.

Scholarship for Future Female Entrepreneurs

• Amount: $2,500 awarded to one recipient
• Application Deadline: Sept. 30, 2022
• Announcement Date: Oct. 14, 2022
• Recurring: Annual
• Eligibility: Self-identify as female.

Be a high school senior or graduate, or current college undergraduate or graduate student.

Planning to enroll in a full-time undergraduate study at a U.S.-accredited college or university for the upcoming academic year. 

Be a U.S. citizen or permanent legal resident.
