Hosted by the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication in collaboration with LAS Career Services, this boutique-style fair takes place each fall and spring and connects relevant employers with students who are preparing for careers in advertising, journalism, public relations and related fields.

Spoon Speaks: True Tales of a College Press Freedom Fighter
|
|
Mark “Spoon” Witherspoon, retired professional editorial adviser for the Iowa State Daily, spent more than 30 years helping college students fight for their rights as journalists. In honor of #StudentPressFreedom Day 2022, Witherspoon will share true tales of press freedom from his days on the front lines and answer questions from the audience. Those who attend are invited to build their own Ice cream sundaes with special First Amendment toppings in Spoon’s honor.
Free and open to the public.

A variety of events are planned to celebrate Black History Month throughout February at Iowa State University and in Ames.
The United States has celebrated Black History Month in February for more than four decades as a time to recognize and honor the achievements and contributions of Black Americans.

Hearst explanatory reporting competition deadlines
|
|
Rolling deadlines continue throughout the spring semester.
The selected entrants must be current undergraduate journalism majors at the time the article is published. An exception is made for spring, summer or fall 2021 graduates, allowing them to enter the contests in the 2021-2022 program year. The entries must have been published before students were graduated.
Entries must have been disseminated in a campus or professional publication or website. If the entry was published in an off-campus publication, a letter from the editor is required verifying that the entry is student work with minimal editing and no editor rewriting.

Iowa Cubs
Video Team Internship
|
|
The Iowa Cubs are seeking qualified individuals to join their video team for the 2022 season. Interns produce broadcasts for Marquee Sports Network, Principal Park video boards, the internet Webcast, and in-house close circuit feeds at Principal Park.
Interns arrive approximately 90 minutes before game time to set up and rotate among camera operators, director, replay operator, and graphics coordinator.
These positions are mostly game-time only. The pay is $10 per hour. Academic credit is available.

Apply for an Oster Journalism 4-H Scholarship

Calling all Greenlee students who are 4-H alumni!
Oster Journalism 4-H Scholarship - $1,500
Provided by Merrill J. Oster, this scholarship is given to an applicant who will be a college sophomore, junior or senior at Iowa State University for the next academic year.
The recipient must major in journalism or communication studies and provide documentation of journalism activity and skills in their application.

Apply for a Roy J. Carver Trust Scholarship
|
|
Twenty Iowa State University students are selected on an annual basis to receive a renewable $6,000 scholarship from the Roy J. Carver Trust. This scholarship is specifically for:
- students who will be junior-level in fall 2022,
- have had unique obstacles while obtaining their degree and
- are an Iowa resident.
Eligibility requirements:
- Evidence of significant social and economic obstacles to attending college full time
- Graduate of accredited Iowa high school or Iowa resident for five years
- College junior classification by fall 2022
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.80
- Demonstrate financial need on basis of the FAFSA (student must file FAFSA for 2022-2023 year)

Students gain real-world experience through certification workshops and projects to showcase in their portfolios. We work with local businesses and clubs to develop their content, website and graphic design materials.
No experience is needed to join. We will begin work on several new projects in our upcoming meetings.

Association of LGBTQ Journalists hosting 2nd annual student conference (virtual)
|
This virtual gathering will take place from Feb. 25-26 and will feature opportunities for students to learn from industry experts, connect with fellow student journalists, and explore the intersections of the media world and LGBTQ identities.
Sessions will feature discussions on topics like deciding whether journalism school is right for you, building an investigative story and navigating identity in the newsroom. Students will also have the opportunity to connect with recruiters from top news organizations at the Internship & Career Fair.
