Hugh S. Sidey Scholarship recipient: Cooper Pierce
|
Congratulations to junior in journalism and mass communication and political science, Cooper Pierce, on being selected as the Hugh S. Sidey Scholarship in Print Journalism recipient!
The Sidey Scholarship was established in 2006 at Sidey’s alma mater, Iowa State University, by way of The White House Historical Association. The award supports aspiring print journalists at the Greenlee School who exhibit extraordinary understanding of the responsibilities of covering the chief executive and the core principle of social responsibility that resides with print journalist.

Jump-Start Internship & Networking Fair countdown: 2 days

Hosted by the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication in collaboration with LAS Career Services, this boutique-style fair takes place each fall and spring and connects relevant employers with students who are preparing for careers in advertising, journalism, public relations and related fields.

Spoon Speaks: True Tales of a College Press Freedom Fighter

Mark “Spoon” Witherspoon, retired professional editorial adviser for the Iowa State Daily, spent more than 30 years helping college students fight for their rights as journalists. In honor of #StudentPressFreedom Day 2022, Witherspoon will share true tales of press freedom from his days on the front lines and answer questions from the audience. Those who attend are invited to build their own Ice cream sundaes with special First Amendment toppings in Spoon’s honor.

Sinclair Broadcast Group's News Reporter Academy Returns March 30
|

Virtual Session Open to Students Exploring Careers in News Reporting
Sinclair Broadcast Group’s News Reporter Academy, an interactive workshop for college students interested in pursuing a career in news reporting, will hold its next virtual session on March 30 from Noon-3p ET / 9-12p PT.
Now in its second year, the News Reporter Academy, hosted by Sinclair’s award-winning corporate news operation, gives students an opportunity to learn about working in a newsroom and interact with Sinclair’s industry-leading teams.
In the three-hour interactive session, students will learn the basics of news reporting and investigative storytelling, managing a social media presence, how to look and sound their best on-camera and how to package a resume and reel.
After the success of Sinclair Broadcast Group’s Producer Academy, a workshop for students interested in pursuing a career in digital or broadcast news producing, which is now in its fifth year, the company developed a seminar for students focused on news reporting.
This FREE, virtual workshop is open to undergraduate and graduate college students.

Hearst explanatory reporting competition deadlines
|
|
Rolling deadlines continue throughout the spring semester.
The selected entrants must be current undergraduate journalism majors at the time the article is published. An exception is made for spring, summer or fall 2021 graduates, allowing them to enter the contests in the 2021-2022 program year. The entries must have been published before students were graduated.
Entries must have been disseminated in a campus or professional publication or website. If the entry was published in an off-campus publication, a letter from the editor is required verifying that the entry is student work with minimal editing and no editor rewriting.

Provided by Merrill J. Oster, this scholarship is given to an applicant who will be a college sophomore, junior or senior at Iowa State University for the next academic year.
The recipient must major in journalism or communication studies and provide documentation of journalism activity and skills in their application.

Al Young Sports Journalism Scholarship: $2,000 to an undergraduate student pursuing sports journalism as a career.
Jimmie and Suey Fong Yee Fellowships: $1,500 + free Asian American Journalists Association Sports Task Force (AAJA STF) convention registration to two recipients pursuing a career in sports journalism and media.

Apply for a Roy J. Carver Trust Scholarship
|
|
Twenty Iowa State University students are selected on an annual basis to receive a renewable $6,000 scholarship from the Roy J. Carver Trust. This scholarship is specifically for:
- students who will be junior-level in fall 2022,
- have had unique obstacles while obtaining their degree and
- are an Iowa resident.
Eligibility requirements:
- Evidence of significant social and economic obstacles to attending college full time
- Graduate of accredited Iowa high school or Iowa resident for five years
- College junior classification by fall 2022
- Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.80
- Demonstrate financial need on basis of the FAFSA (student must file FAFSA for 2022-2023 year)

March 1 info meeting -- Dotdash Meredith Apprentice Program
|
The Greenlee School’s partnership with Dotdash Meredith—America’s largest digital and print publisher—places ten Iowa State students in editorial and graphic design apprenticeships for an entire academic year with brands and departments such as Better Homes and Gardens, Allrecipes, Midwest Living/Meredith Travel Media, Successful Farming, Meredith Premium Publishing, Meredith Ecommerce and more. The paid positions also qualify for Greenlee’s 400-hour required 499A internship.
Join us for free pizza at an informational meeting on Tuesday, March 1, from 8 to 9 p.m. in 172 Hamilton Hall. There will also be an option to attend virtually through Webex (link coming soon).
Next year’s apprenticeships include both editorial and graphic design positions with Des Moines-based media brands. Some opportunities may also be available for remote assignments with teams based in New York and other offices. More information about assignments will be available at the meeting. Apprentices must be junior or senior status by fall 2022 and commit to working both the fall 2022 and spring 2023 semesters.
The application will be posted on the Greenlee School website on March 2. Applications are due Friday, March 25, by noon.
