2021 Summer at the Circus program, Atlanta,

|
Considering a career in advertising art direction or copywriting? The 8-week Summer at the Circus program is an in-depth crash course in advertising creativity at one of the nation’s first portfolio schools, Creative Circus in Atlanta, GA. You’ll be instructed by Creative Circus’ industry pros and surrounded by other like-minded, aspiring creatives. Participants progress through two-week mini courses in Creative Suite, art direction, idea development, creative strategy, typography, photo/video production, board games creation, and portfolio development.
The program fee is $2,950, not including housing or tuition and fees for academic credit. The program is managed by the University of Georgia’s Ad/PR Department, and housing is available in Atlanta at Emory University.
With your Greenlee advisor permission, the program can fulfill the 499A internship requirement and is eligible for Greenlee scholarship support. (To be considered for a partial scholarship, students must meet other 499A scholarship criteria and apply during the 499A scholarship application period. Scholarship support is not guaranteed.)

Meredith Apprentice Program Info Meeting
|
Get hands-on editorial or graphic design experience with some of the nation's top consumer magazine brands through the Meredith Apprentice Program.
The Greenlee School’s partnership with Meredith Corporation—the No. 1 U.S. magazine operator and owner of the largest premium content digital network for American consumers—places ten Iowa State students in editorial and graphic design apprenticeships for an entire academic year. The paid positions also qualify for Greenlee’s 400-hour required 499A internship.
An online informational meeting for the 2021-22 program will be held Wednesday, March 3, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. via Webex. Please RSVP to attend. You will receive an email containing the Webex link the day before the meeting.
Next year’s apprenticeships include both editorial and graphic design positions. All apprenticeships will be virtual (remote) until further notice due to COVID-19. Titles may be based in Des Moines or New York City. More information about assignments will be available at the meeting. Apprentices must be junior or senior status by fall 2021 and commit to working both the fall 2021 and spring 2022 semesters.
The application will be posted on the Greenlee School website on March 4. Applications are due Friday, March 26.

Description
SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, means setting up your website and content to show up through online search results. While many marketing tactics rely on you reaching out to your audience, SEO gives you the power to reach people when they are actively searching out information related to your products and services.
This one-credit Short Course Intensive will introduce advertising, journalism and public relations majors to the processes that power SEO programs. The course will be conducted by Professor Jay Newell; alumnus Cooper Hollmaier, an SEO project manager with a large specialty outdoor retailer; and alumna Rachel Weber, digital deputy editor, Better Homes and Gardens.

We see your ambition, your drive and your desire to make your mark, and we want to invest in your success. Because of the generosity of our donors, the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication awards over $100,000 in scholarships to its students annually.
To be eligible, students must be enrolled full-time with a primary major in advertising, journalism and mass communication or public relations at the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication for the semester in which the scholarship is issued. Students are considered full-time during the semester for which they are enrolled in ADVRT, JL MC or P R 499A: Professional Media Internship.
To be considered for Greenlee School scholarships, students must submit the General and LAS College portions of the OneApp, including the five designated Greenlee School questions in the LAS application portion.
The Greenlee School scholarship selection committee will use the information available in OneApp as of March 1, 2021 (11:59 p.m.) for Fall 2021 current and transfer student scholarship applications.

Hearst Awards - plan ahead for spring competitions
|
The Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication encourages Greenlee students to submit their best published work for consideration in the 2021 Hearst Journalism Awards competition. The program features competitions throughout the year in writing, photojournalism, audio, television, and multimedia, and the winning students are awarded scholarships and networking opportunities. As a participating school, Greenlee selects the two entrants per competition. The competitions are open to undergraduate journalism majors. An exception to the journalism major rule is made for students entering the photojournalism competitions. Submissions must have been disseminated in professional or student media while the student was an undergraduate.

Congrats, Washington Media Scholars Case Competition Semi-Finalists!
|
Three teams of Greenlee School students qualified for the 2021 Washington Media Scholars Case Competition:
- Colton Boyd & Lydia Wede (Team Cardinal & Gold)
- Anna Olson & Mallory Tope (Team Olson Tope)
- Chloe Garman & Macy Ott (Team Cardinal)
These students will compete against teams from across the country in the semi-final round of this year’s competition. In the semi-finals, the teams will prepare a written media plan for a political advertising case. Six teams will then be selected to present their cases to a panel of media experts in Washington in June 2021.

The Quest for Environmental and Climate Justice
|
When: March 1, 7 p.m.
What: Climate change is the defining global environmental justice, human rights, and public health issue of the twenty-first century. The most vulnerable populations in the United States and around the world will suffer the earliest and most damaging setbacks because of where they live, their limited income and economic means, and their lack of access to health care. Professor Robert Bullard’s presentation will focus primarily on the U.S. and the need for empowering vulnerable populations, identifying environmental justice and climate change “hot-spot” zones and designing fair, just and effective adaptation, mitigation, emergency management and community resilience and disaster recovery strategies. He will offer a framework for dismantling systemic racism and policies and practices that create, exacerbate, and perpetuate inequality and vulnerability. Learn more.

What: The author of the memoir, Permanent Record, former CIA officer and National Security Agency (NSA) consultant Edward Snowden risked everything to expose the U.S. government’s system of mass surveillance. He is the subject of the Oscar-winning best documentary Citizenfour and the critically acclaimed Oliver Stone film, Snowden.
