Spring Courses Sneak Peek
JL MC 260X, "Controversies in Science and Technology" (online)
This course will introduce students to the intersection of science, media and society. Our exploration will be driven by three overarching questions and the interplay among them: (1) How do individuals come to understand and perceive science? (2) How do media and communication tools influence the spread of information about science? and (3) How do scientists themselves contribute to the process of communicating science?
JL MC 347, "Science Writing" (in person, limited seating)
Reporting and writing about science and technology topics for general audiences. Outlets for stories include print, broadcast and online media. Story topics include reporting about basic, applied and social sciences, as well as ethical, political and policy issues related to science and technology.
JL MC 390L, "Cold Case Journalism: Greenlee Investigates"
In fall 2021, students in JLMC 390L came up with the idea for Greenlee Investigates and created a multimedia series and podcast about the unsolved murder of Sheila Collins. In spring 2023, a new cohort of students will take over, selecting a new case to investigate and finding new stories to tell.
This hands-on course introduces students to cold case journalism, a type of investigative journalism that uses reporting techniques to uncover the facts of an unsolved crime and lays out those facts with compelling storytelling. The course offers an opportunity to develop students’ skills and information literacy by finding and working with public documents and data, interviewing sources, weaving information into a narrative, and publishing multimedia packages. The resulting stories often raise thought-provoking questions related to public affairs, legal procedures and criminal justice.
JL MC 391R, "Sports Broadcasting Bootcamp"
This course introduces students to sports broadcasting roles in radio/television/live streaming, including play-by-play, color analyst, sideline reporter and producer. "Voice of the Cyclones" and Cyclones.tv director John Walters will help teach the class.
