Next, let's talk misconceptions about Jump-Start
"I'm a first year student, and I don't feel ready for an internship or job this summer."
That's OK. It’s called the Jump-Start Internship and Networking Fair for a reason! Attend anyway to network, learn and start building connections.

Employers come again and again because they love meeting and hiring Iowa State students. This is a great opportunity to introduce yourself and find out about the skills ideal candidates possess. Take what you learn, and run with it by bolstering your resume and portfolio through coursework, clubs and other opportunities in the following semesters. Someday, you’ll be the ideal internship candidate.
"I'd prefer not to stay in Iowa for my internship, and I plan to move out of state when I graduate."
We understand your aspirations may take you on adventures across the nation or around the world. That’s awesome!

It’s true. The Jump-Start Fair attracts many local and regional employers, including community newspapers, local stations, ad agencies, PR firms, government offices, video production studios, corporations, nonprofits and other organizations. But we hear one thing again and again—employers in advertising, journalism, public relations and related fields value experience more than anything else on your resume. And you can’t get experience without pursuing opportunities that will give you experience, right? That internship at the community newspaper or Iowa nonprofit might be the thing that gives you an edge when you’re applying for that competitive national program on the other side of the country. Trust us. We’ve seen it happen. Plus, some employers may be located locally but have offices all over the country.
"I've already completed my internship."
Good for you! One is great—and required. Two—even better! Three—you’ve just fast-tracked your resume to the top of the stack. We encourage you to get as many professional experiences as your schedule allows while you’re still a student.

Even if you’re not actively looking for an internship, how many opportunities do you have to network—for free—with a "room" full of professionals who currently work in the field you aspire to be a part of? Some Jump-Start employers are also looking for full-time employees. You won’t know unless you attend.
"Employers at the Jump-Start Fair only offer unpaid opportunities."
We strongly encourage all employers to offer paid internship opportunities. While some employers may offer unpaid internships, we find the majority do, and many very competitively. The Greenlee School and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences both also offer scholarship opportunities to assist students while they’re doing internships.
You've got this. Go get 'em!
Spoon Speaks: True Tales of a College Press Freedom Fighter

Those who attend are invited to build their own Ice cream sundaes with special First Amendment toppings in Spoon’s honor.

Hearst explanatory reporting competition deadlines
Rolling deadlines continue throughout the spring semester.

The entries must have been published before students were graduated.

Entries must have been disseminated in a campus or professional publication or website. If the entry was published in an off-campus publication, a letter from the editor is required verifying that the entry is student work with minimal editing and no editor rewriting.
