LAS awards a limited number of scholarships for undergraduate students completing an unpaid internship. The scholarships are one-time awards. Students working at non-profit and government organizations off-campus will receive priority consideration. Apply by Dec. 15 for Spring 2020 internship awards.

Submit your work for Hearst Awards consideration
|
The Hearst Journalism Awards program awards scholarships to students for outstanding performance in college-level journalism, with matching grants to the students’ schools.
The 60th annual program offers up to $700,000 in awards and consists of five monthly writing competitions, two photojournalism competitions, one radio competition, two television competitions and four multimedia competitions – with championship finals in all divisions. It's a great resume builder and could be a networking opportunity if you advance to the next rounds.
The Greenlee School may submit two entrants' work per competition.
Radio - News and Features
(due by noon on Tuesday, Jan. 7)
- Each entry must consist of at least one report in news and one report in features, with one piece 60 seconds or less and the second piece up to three minutes.Entries consist of a story on any topic that is told through the medium of video for a digital audience.
- Any additional pieces submitted must be less than three minutes each, with a combined running time of no more than seven minutes. The reports may be part of a longer newscast, but the entry itself is limited to seven minutes.
- Entries may be based on but not limited to public affairs, business, investigations, science, sports or weather.
- Radio entries disseminated on a podcast are accepted.
- Entries may be accompanied by multimedia versions of the reports entered as long as they were produced primarily by the entrant.
- Entries must have been disseminated on air or online or both from September 1, 2018 through January 13, 2020.

. You must complete the five designated Greenlee School questions in the LAS application portion of OneApp by the stated deadline to be considered for scholarships.
The Greenlee School scholarship selection committee will use the information available in OneApp as of

is recruiting freshmen, sophomores or juniors with an interest in research related to gender and politics for a new research opportunity with the Carrie Chapman Catt Center for Women and Politics. She is particularly interested in s
tudents in journalism, public relations, advertising, communication studies, political science, event management, women and gender studies, and speech communication.
Through this Vertically Integrated Project (VIP), students will have the opportunity to participate in original research focused on women and politics, get experience working with graduate students and faculty in a real-world team environment, and receive up to three credit hours in the Spring 2020 semester. After participating in the program for a semester, students may have the option to continue and help mentor new students in the program.

Greenlee master’s program

Two tracks are available: one for students who desire specialized study in communication theory and research and one for students who wish to develop or strengthen their professional and strategic communication skills.

NewsTrain Digital Media Training - April 4, 2020
|
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Journalism and Mass Communication will host a low-cost journalism training on April 4, 2020. NewsTrain is a nationally-sponsored, one-day workshop designed for working journalists, professors and students. The skills journalists need are changing constantly. NewsTrain gives journalists and communicators those skills so they can go back to their classes, newsrooms, colleges or universities better prepared.
The day includes five sessions of topics specially selected by local journalists and designed to teach immediately usable skills, including:
- Using social media as powerful reporting tools,
- Storytelling on mobile: making smart choices,
- Becoming a verification ninja,
- Editing smarter video on your smartphone, with #MobileJournalism evangelist Geoff Roth, and
- Mining data for enterprise off any beat, with USA Today Senior Reporter Matt Wynn.
The early-bird rate of $75 includes two light meals. The first 20 registrants receive a free, yearlong, online subscription to The AP Stylebook.
Journalists, journalism educators and journalism students from diverse backgrounds are invited to apply for competitive scholarships, which cover their registration, by Feb. 19.

Greenlee welcomes journalists from Serbia
|
|
Yesterday, the Greenlee School and the Iowa State Daily Media Group welcomed five journalists from Serbia. The journalists are hosted by the Iowa International Center as part of a 10-day visit through the U.S. Congress's
Open World program.
They visited several classes to see how Greenlee helps future journalists develop ethics and skills to help them be responsible communicators. They'll also visit a number of journalistic groups, including the Des Moines Register, KCCI, IPTV, INA, a journalism class with the Des Moines Public Schools and a few others while they are here.

Parks Library will be open around the clock Dec. 8-19, during study and finals weeks.
Study Week activities, Dec. 9-13:
- Comfort dogs will be in Parks Library (Upper Rotunda) from noon-4 p.m. Follow the paw prints.
- Coloring pages and books, puzzles, and games are available.
- Mindfulness Room, Room 297, is available during library hours.
- Chair massages will be offered three days during Study Week. There will be one chair available 1-4 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.
