Last chance to take the PIE Exam!

If you need to take JL MC 201 in Spring 2020, you will need to take the Poynter Institute Exam (PIE) this semester and received a score of 78 or above to pass. If you have already taken JL MC 201 or are currently enrolled, you do not need to take the exam.
Our last testing date for the PIE will be this Friday, Dec. 6 in Hamilton 10A and 10B. Tests will begin on the hour at 9 a.m., 10 a.m., 11 a.m., noon, 1 p.m., and 2 p.m. Students can only take the exam once per testing date.

Submit your work for Hearst Awards consideration
|
The Hearst Journalism Awards program awards scholarships to students for outstanding performance in college-level journalism, with matching grants to the students’ schools.
The 60th annual program offers up to $700,000 in awards and consists of five monthly writing competitions, two photojournalism competitions, one radio competition, two television competitions and four multimedia competitions – with championship finals in all divisions. It's a great resume builder and could be a networking opportunity if you advance to the next rounds.
The Greenlee School may submit two entrants' work per competition.
Radio - News and Features
(due by noon on Tuesday, Jan. 7)
- Each entry must consist of at least one report in news and one report in features, with one piece 60 seconds or less and the second piece up to three minutes.Entries consist of a story on any topic that is told through the medium of video for a digital audience.
- Any additional pieces submitted must be less than three minutes each, with a combined running time of no more than seven minutes. The reports may be part of a longer newscast, but the entry itself is limited to seven minutes.
- Entries may be based on but not limited to public affairs, business, investigations, science, sports or weather.
- Radio entries disseminated on a podcast are accepted.
- Entries may be accompanied by multimedia versions of the reports entered as long as they were produced primarily by the entrant.
- Entries must have been disseminated on air or online or both from September 1, 2018 through January 13, 2020.

- P R 324X—Brand Storytelling 11/4 update: Times now announced in class schedule. Tues./Thurs. 11 a.m.-12:20 p.m. (JL MC 201 prerequisite)
- This class focuses on combining critical journalism skills with the persuasive tactics of public relations and advertising to help students learn to tell inspired brand stories. Students will be introduced to transmedia storytelling that tells compelling stories, which will be shared with and by diverse audiences. Today’s audiences are focused on trust and authenticity in the brands they interact with. Brand storytelling, with its roots in fact-based journalism, is how brands best relate to modern audiences. Throughout the course students will explore audiences’ relationships with brands to create meaningful and emotional connections through storytelling. Students will examine works of narrative non-fiction and persuasion, and apply those techniques to persuasive brand storytelling.

is recruiting freshmen, sophomores or juniors with an interest in research related to gender and politics for a new research opportunity with the Carrie Chapman Catt Center for Women and Politics. She is particularly interested in s
tudents in journalism, public relations, advertising, communication studies, political science, event management, women and gender studies, and speech communication.
Through this Vertically Integrated Project (VIP), students will have the opportunity to participate in original research focused on women and politics, get experience working with graduate students and faculty in a real-world team environment, and receive up to three credit hours in the Spring 2020 semester. After participating in the program for a semester, students may have the option to continue and help mentor new students in the program.

NewsTrain Digital Media Training - April 4, 2020
|
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Journalism and Mass Communication will host a low-cost journalism training on April 4, 2020. NewsTrain is a nationally-sponsored, one-day workshop designed for working journalists, professors and students. The skills journalists need are changing constantly. NewsTrain gives journalists and communicators those skills so they can go back to their classes, newsrooms, colleges or universities better prepared.
The day includes five sessions of topics specially selected by local journalists and designed to teach immediately usable skills, including:
- Using social media as powerful reporting tools,
- Storytelling on mobile: making smart choices,
- Becoming a verification ninja,
- Editing smarter video on your smartphone, with #MobileJournalism evangelist Geoff Roth, and
- Mining data for enterprise off any beat, with USA Today Senior Reporter Matt Wynn.
The early-bird rate of $75 includes two light meals. The first 20 registrants receive a free, yearlong, online subscription to The AP Stylebook.
Journalists, journalism educators and journalism students from diverse backgrounds are invited to apply for competitive scholarships, which cover their registration, by Feb. 19.

Dr. Roy Tamashiro will share lessons learned from his global peace pilgrimage in the South Ballroom of the Memorial Union on Wednesday, Dec. 4 at 7 p.m. He found insights into healing and peace from the stories of Holocaust survivors, massacre witness-survivors in Vietnam and Korea, and “A-bomb legacy successors” who shared their memories and traumas.
