Due to the extension of remote learning at Iowa State University, the Poynter Institute Exam (PIE) will be offered online for the rest of the spring 2020 semester. Students will no longer come into Hamilton Hall on the designated testing days. Instead, students will take the PIE through the Poynter Institute website on their own time from any computer with internet access.
Students will have until
4 p.m. CDT Friday, May 1, 2020
, to use their 5 attempts at the test. Passing requires a score of at least 78% (117 questions right out of 150).
Students who have already taken the exam will have those attempts count toward their total. For example, if a student already took the exam twice in person for spring 2020, they would have three more attempts to complete online.

Apply for LAS unpaid internship scholarships
The
College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS)
awards a limited number of scholarships to LAS undergraduate students during the semester they are enrolled in an internship where no compensation is paid by the employer.
Students will need to enroll in an internship course for course credit or R-credit and maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0.
Students will be notified of the awarding of a scholarship within two weeks of the deadline. Scholarships range from $500 to $2,000 and will be applied to the student’s UBill the semester of the unpaid internship.

Summer is a great time to take
ADVRT / P R 301: Research and Strategic Planning for Advertising and Public Relations, a requirement for all advertising and PR majors.
The course will be structured in two-week modules that let you work at your own pace. The project is focused on campaign development for Target, including researching consumer perception and behaviors, conducting a social media analysis, developing a creative concept, and creating campaign ideas for your portfolio.

Learn the basics of publication-worthy food photography from veteran professionals. Photographers, food editors, art directors and food stylists will share the basics of making food look visually appealing. Discover the tips and tricks of still-life food shots and step-by-step recipe images. Note: This is a hybrid course. Online assignments also will be due before and after the Oct. 10 Meredith classroom event.

Photojournalists: Earn a $5,000 grant from Getty Images
|
Getty Images will award eight $5,000 grants to photojournalists working to safely capture COVID-19 stories worldwide in 2020.
Particular consideration will given to those working in their home locations or immediate regions. Recipients will be selected from a global pool of entrants and judged by an esteemed panel of photographers, journalists and creatives.
Submissions close on Friday, May 15 at midnight EST.

Updated: Greenlee COVID-19 Internship Policy for Spring/Summer 2020
|
For students who (a) are or were working in their approved 499A internship during the spring or summer semesters of 2020 or (b) are planning to graduate in spring, summer or fall 2020, we are offering
several options. Students should consult with their advisers as they consider what is best for their situation.
NOTE: The policy has been updated to include more information about the online coursework option
for students who started approved internships or intended to secure approved internships during spring or summer 2020
and who, because of disruptions from COVID-19, including safety concerns, (a) are unable to complete at least 200 of the required 400 hours of their approved internship or (b) are unable to secure an approved internship:
You may fulfill the internship requirement by completing 3-credits of online coursework in summer 2020 that will help prepare you for working in media and communication and guide you through a project related to your professional goals. This course begins May 18. To account for the continuing uncertainty surrounding employment opportunities this summer, students will be allowed to add this course through June 30. Students interested in this option should ask their faculty adviser to contact the Greenlee Internship Coordinator and request to be added to this section of 499A.

Students, faculty and staff who need Wi-Fi service can now access an ISU internet connection from their vehicle in a Jack Trice Stadium parking lot. Those with an active ISU Net-ID can park in lot S7 (near gate 2) and use their ISU credentials to connect to the
Eduroam network
from their vehicle.

Adobe Creative Cloud, coursework and other reminders
|
Equipment checkout (cameras, microphones, etc.) and open labs will be closed during our period of online instruction. Your instructors have been notified and will be offering alternative assignments as necessary.
We also have an option to use your personal computer to remotely log into one of our lab computers to access additional software resources. Your instructor will provide the necessary instructions if this pertains to your course.

Updated Pass/Not Pass policy
|
Iowa State passed a new policy to allow students in any course that was changed to virtual instruction as a result of COVID-19 to take the course as Pass/Not Pass and still have it count towards curricular, major, academic progress, and graduation requirements.
This temporary policy now also applies to courses that were designated to be taught fully online at the start of Spring 2020 semeste
r (e.g. courses with a section designator starting with an “X”).

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is launching a new two-year academy for all LAS majors, where you can engage in online, face-to-face, and interactive activities to experience and develop an innovative and entrepreneurial mindset. We’ll even match you with a mentor in the second year, and you can emerge from the academy with a well-defined path to develop your big idea – or ideas you may have in the future!
The program is geared to first and second-year LAS majors. Participants must be enrolled in an LAS major and maintain a minimum 2.25 GPA.
