The News (Kalona) - Feb. 27
The News has an opening for a summer intern starting in May 2020 and concluding in August 2020. The intern will work as a reporter-photographer in our newsroom, covering a variety of assignments including breaking news, meetings, feature stories and profiles. The intern will cover the Washington and Johnson counties fairs, shooting photos of all 4-H winners. Our interns develop a sense of the excitement of working for a newspaper and learn lessons in journalism ethics and professionalism that only come from first-hand experience.
The optimal intern has taken classes in the basics of journalism and has a flair for writing stories that capture readers with well-crafted leads and keep them hooked through the entire story. Our interns take photos that capture an event in a well-composed image.
We want an intern who can develop his or her own story ideas as well as completing story assignments. Our interns write 10 or more stories per week, plus complete a major project during the internship. At the beginning of the internship, the intern meets with the publisher to develop a set of goals for the internship - what they want to learn, what skills they want to develop. The publisher meets weekly with the intern to discuss progress toward those goals.
Interns may be a junior or senior, but we consider freshmen or sophomores who show great promise. After working with us, the intern has the clips to land an internship or a full-time job at a regional daily. The intern works full time (40-plus hours per week) for at least 10 weeks during the summer and gets paid $10 per hour plus overtime and mileage.
The News is a 2,100-circulation weekly published on Thursdays. We have a staff of six - a publisher, ad sales executive, graphic designer, sports editor, news editor and office manager. Although our staff is small, we produce a quality newspaper, yet we are constantly working to improve.
The News covers north Washington County including the communities of Wellman, Kalona, Riverside and Lone Tree. Washington County is largely rural and is located just 20 minutes southwest of Iowa City.
Interested? Send a resume and five samples of your work (a link to an online portfolio is fine) to: Jim Johnson at
Publisher@TheNews-IA.com
. Our search for interns is statewide, and we will make a decision before April 1.
Please email clips or links of your work/portfolio and a resume to Jim prior to the interview time.
Half-hour interviews are available between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 27. Sign up for your time in 101 Hamilton Hall! Interviews will take place in 007 Hamilton.
