New spring 2021 SEO short course intensive

Description
SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, means setting up your website and content to show up through online search results. While many marketing tactics rely on you reaching out to your audience, SEO gives you the power to reach people when they are actively searching out information related to your products and services.
This one-credit Short Course Intensive will introduce advertising, journalism and public relations majors to the processes that power SEO programs. The course will be conducted by Professor Jay Newell; the REI Cooperatives’ Seattle-based head of technical search engine optimization, Cooper Hollmaier; and Better Homes and Gardens' Des Moines-based digital deputy editor Rachel Weber.

Greenlee Student Media Panel Discussion, Student Press Freedom Day – First Amendment Series

Please join us for a special panel discussion with Greenlee student media representatives in honor of #StudentPressFreedom Day, a national day of action to celebrate and support student journalists. With the theme Journalism Against the Odds, hear firsthand how student editors, reporters and producers work tirelessly to provide exceptional news coverage despite challenges. Staff members from Ethos, Cardinal Eats, the Iowa State Daily, Greenlee TV and others will share triumphs and challenges from the last year, a year like no other. First Amendment Specialist Julie Roosa will moderate. Questions from the audience are encouraged. This event is free and open to the public.

Apply for scholarships in OneApp
|
We see your ambition, your drive and your desire to make your mark, and we want to invest in your success. Because of the generosity of our donors, the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication awards over $100,000 in scholarships to its students annually.
To be eligible, students must be enrolled full-time with a primary major in advertising, journalism and mass communication or public relations at the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication for the semester in which the scholarship is issued. Students are considered full-time during the semester for which they are enrolled in ADVRT, JL MC or P R 499A: Professional Media Internship.
To be considered for Greenlee School scholarships, students must submit the General and LAS College portions of the OneApp, including the five designated Greenlee School questions in the LAS application portion.
The Greenlee School scholarship selection committee will use the information available in OneApp as of March 1, 2021 (11:59 p.m.) for Fall 2021 current and transfer student scholarship applications.

Hearst Awards - plan ahead for spring competitions
|
The Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication encourages Greenlee students to submit their best published work for consideration in the 2021 Hearst Journalism Awards competition. The program features competitions throughout the year in writing, photojournalism, audio, television, and multimedia, and the winning students are awarded scholarships and networking opportunities. As a participating school, Greenlee selects the two entrants per competition. The competitions are open to undergraduate journalism majors. An exception to the journalism major rule is made for students entering the photojournalism competitions. Submissions must have been disseminated in professional or student media while the student was an undergraduate.

Two tracks are available: one for students who desire specialized study in communication theory and research and one for students who wish to develop or strengthen their professional and strategic communication skills.

LAS Pitch Competition and Workshop
|
The Pappajohn Center for Entrepreneurship's College-by-College Pitch Off is back — compete for a chance to win up to $5,000 by pitching an entrepreneurial idea! The LAS pitch competition is Feb. 22 from 3 to 5 p.m. Deliver a 90-second pitch about an idea or business you are working on to a panel of judges for cash prizes. In addition to a cash prize, the top four winners in each college pitch-off will advance to the ISU Innovation Pitch Competition held on Feb. 25, 2021. Learn more and register.

Monday Monologues returns for spring with a virtual lineup

Monday Monologues is a University Library-hosted performance series that spotlights Iowa State student and faculty voices. The series this semester features six exciting performances including powerful poetry, personal student perspectives and joyful music. Most shows will be livestreamed via the Library YouTube channel. Two musical presentations will be performed live on the steps in front of Parks Library. The series kicks off Feb. 22.

2021 Social Justice Summit

The Social Justice Summit, now in its tenth year, is an event designed for ISU students aimed at developing advocates and activists. The event promotes critical questioning and relevant actions while providing avenues for addressing global injustice. Registration is FREE and open to all ISU students.
