Communicating Science, Health, Environment and Risk (ComSHER) Undergraduate Research Fellowship

This fellowship was created to help support a vibrant undergraduate researcher program in the Greenlee School. The $1200 stipend associated with this fellowship will be awarded up to support sophomores, juniors and seniors working with faculty members on research related on Communicating Science, Health, Environment and Risk (ComSHER) topics. Join the Greenlee School communications team

The Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication is hiring a highly motivated journalism, public relations or advertising major to join its communications team.

The position offers an opportunity for a student to build a portfolio by working on a variety of projects depending on area of specialty and interest.

This position will report directly to Greenlee’s communications specialist but may also collaborate with Greenlee School faculty and staff on assignments.

Duties:
  • Research, interview and write feature stories, news releases, profiles, social media posts and/or advertising copy as assigned. Content will highlight Greenlee students, faculty, alumni, staff, events, school-affiliated student organizations, etc. for the Greenlee School’s website, newsletters, social media platforms, alumni magazine, etc.
  • Assist with promotion and coverage of Greenlee events (strategy, planning, media outreach, posters, flyers, photography, etc.)
  • Develop and analyze performance of social media content that highlights Greenlee’s key messages
  • Contribute to student experience blog

Required qualifications:
  • Stellar writing and editing skills – ability to adapt voice and style as needed for audience and medium
  • Excellent verbal communication skills
  • Coursework and demonstrated experience in journalism, advertising and/or public relations
  • Proficiency in AP Style
  •  Ability to take direction and work independently
  • Attention to detail, reliability, professionalism

Preferred qualifications:
  • Experience with Adobe programs, including Indesign, Illustrator and Photoshop
  • Experience uploading content to Wordpress and basic HTML knowledge
  • Familiarity with social media scheduling tools, such as Hootsuite and Later
  • Photography, videography, multimedia and visual communication skills a plus
  • Work-study eligibility preferred but not required.

First Amendment Series: Iowa State Daily Panel Discussion
When: Wednesday, Jan. 29, 12:10-1 p.m.
Where: 163 Hamilton Hall
What: Please join us for a special panel discussion with the staff of the Iowa State Daily in recognition of #StudentPressFreedom Day, a national day of action to celebrate and support student journalists. Hear first-hand how the Daily, an award-winning, nationally recognized student news operation, works 24/7 to provide the most comprehensive coverage of news, sports and entertainment in the area. First Amendment Specialist Julie Roosa will moderate. Questions from the audience are encouraged. This event is free and open to the public.

Apply for 2020-21 Greenlee Scholarships by March 2
We see your ambition, your drive and your desire to make your mark, and we want to invest in your success. Because of the generosity of our donors, the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication awards over $100,000 in scholarships to its students annually.

Apply for Greenlee School scholarships, along with other scholarships available through Iowa State University, using  OneApp . You must complete the five designated Greenlee School questions in the LAS application portion of OneApp by the stated deadline to be considered for scholarships.

The Greenlee School scholarship selection committee will use the information available in OneApp as of March 2, 2020 by 11:59 p.m. for current undergraduate and transfer students.
Submit your work for Hearst Awards consideration
The Hearst Journalism Awards program awards scholarships to students for outstanding performance in college-level journalism, with matching grants to the students’ schools.

The 60th annual program offers up to $700,000 in awards and consists of five monthly writing competitions, two photojournalism competitions, one radio competition, two television competitions and four multimedia competitions – with championship finals in all divisions. It's a great resume builder and could be a networking opportunity if you advance to the next rounds.

The Greenlee School may submit two entrants' work per competition.

Photojournalism II - Picture Story/Series (due by noon on Tuesday, Jan. 28)
  • Each entry must include one picture story/series (still images) with up to fifteen images on any subject.
  • Optional: entrant may include a video that contains the images submitted in the picture story, not to exceed 60 seconds.
  • Nat sound or dialog is acceptable, but not necessary.
  • All photographs must have been taken during the following time frame and one image must have been disseminated in print or online or both from September 1, 2018 through February 3, 2020.

Spring 2020 PIE Testing Dates
Passing the Poynter Institute Exam (known in Greenlee as PIE) is a prerequisite for JL MC 201. The exam is offered as part of an online course, Iowa State University Language Primer Course Pack (Spring 2020), offered through Poynter’s News University. Students must receive a score of 78% or above to pass the PIE.

Although you can work through the course and the practice drills from any browser, you must take the exam in Hamilton Hall during a testing day for your score to count. You can only take the exam once per testing date.

Two tracks are available: one for students who desire specialized study in communication theory and research and one for students who wish to develop or strengthen their professional and strategic communication skills.

Within the master’s program, you will explore new ideas through a flexible curriculum that can be tailored to your individual interests and program of study. We will challenge your thinking and deepen your expertise to prepare you for a successful future.

Save the date for a Greenlee School open house on Tuesday, Feb. 11 from noon-1:30 p.m. in 172 and 178 Hamilton Hall . Read suffrage speeches aloud, make $$$

The Catt Center is seeking student readers to present selections from key suffrage speeches and documents as part of the statewide kick-off commemorating the 19 th  Amendment. The event will take place at ISU in the Memorial Union on Friday, Feb. 14. Student performers will work with Dr. Kelly Winfrey to identify and rehearse their selections. The session will run two hours and the Catt Center will pay participating students $50 each. Students must be available from 3-5:30 p.m. on the day of the performance.

How to Be An Antiracist, Ibram X. Kendi lecture

What: Celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at the  Legacy Convocation . This year the  2020 Martin Luther King Jr. Legacy Series Keynote  will feature Dr. Ibram X. Kendi, the author of the best-selling books:  How to Be an Antiracist  and  Stamped from the Beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America.  Dr. Kendi's concept of antiracism reenergizes and reshapes the conversation about racial justice in America--but even more fundamentally, points us toward liberating new ways of thinking about ourselves and each other. Instead of working with the policies and system we have in place, Kendi asks us to think about what an antiracist society might look like, and how we can play an active role in building it. Dr. Kendi is the Founding Director of The Antiracist Research & Policy Center at American University in Washington, D.C. He is one of America's foremost historians and leading antiracist voices. 

The Advancing One Community Awards will be awarded prior to the keynote address.
