Registration is right around the corner. If you have not already done so, please log into AccessPlus and click on the "Current Student" tab to view your assigned registration start date and time.
If you have a faculty adviser, please contact the faculty member directly to set up an advising appointment.
If you have an academic adviser (Jessica Hansen-Moench, Kelsie Poe, or Juli Probasco-Sowers), please schedule through AccessPlus > ISU Appointment or call the front office at 515-294-4342 to schedule your RAN appointment. Jessica, Kelsie, and Juli ask that you call now to schedule appointments as appointment times will fill up fast. HOWEVER, please request a meeting time that is just a day or two before your assigned registration date. This way, when we meet to discuss classes, we will have a better idea of what classes are still open and what are closed.

Apply to be a Greenlee Learning Community Peer Mentor
|
Peer mentors are integral to the success of the Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication’s
two learning communities
. Greenlee hires separate peer mentors for each learning community, one of which focuses on advertising and public relations, the other on journalism. Peer mentors offer experience and guidance to first-year students. Our peer mentors, who must be juniors or seniors with declared majors in Greenlee, take on these roles:
- Assist in the Greenlee orientation sections set aside for learning communities.
- Organize study groups, social and professional events and out-of class activities.
- Act as role models for students new to Iowa State and connect them with university resources.
Benefits for peer mentors
- Greenlee peer mentors develop leadership, organization and interpersonal skills needed to become successful, practicing professionals.
- Iowa State University peer mentor looks great on a résumé.
- Each Greenlee peer mentors works about eight hours per week throughout the semester and is paid for their training and mentoring time.\
How to become a Greenlee peer mentor - NOW HIRING
We are always looking for Greenlee students to serve as peer mentors. Applications for fall 2020 are due by the end of the day Sunday, March 22, which is the end of spring break.
If you are applying for the Advertising/PR Learning Community, you’ll need room in your fall 2020 class schedule to attend (but not register for) all or part of JL MC 110 sections 1 and 5, which meet from 8 to 9:20 a.m. and from 9:30 to 10:50 a.m. Tuesdays.
If you are applying for the Journalism Learning Community, you’ll need room in your fall 2020 class schedule to attend (but not register for) all or part of JL MC 110 sections 2 and 4, which meet from 8 to 9:20 a.m. and from 9:30 to 10:50 a.m. Thursdays.

Apply for the Meredith Apprentice Program by March 13

Intern for the nation’s leading magazine publishing company through the
Meredith Apprentice Program
. Ten apprenticeships will be filled by Iowa State University students for the 2020-2021 academic year. These paid positions are based at Meredith’s headquarters in downtown Des Moines.

Submit your work for Hearst Awards consideration
|
The Hearst Journalism Awards program awards scholarships to students for outstanding performance in college-level journalism, with matching grants to the students’ schools.
The 60th annual program offers up to $700,000 in awards and consists of five monthly writing competitions, two photojournalism competitions, one radio competition, two television competitions and four multimedia competitions – with championship finals in all divisions. It's a great resume builder and could be a networking opportunity if you advance to the next rounds.
The Greenlee School may submit two entrants' work per competition.

Spring 2020 PIE Testing Dates
|
Passing the
Poynter Institute Exam (known in Greenlee as PIE)
is a prerequisite for JL MC 201. The exam is offered as part of an online course, Iowa State University Language Primer Course Pack (Spring 2020), offered through Poynter’s News University. Students must receive a score of 78% or above to pass the PIE.
Although you can work through the course and the practice drills from any browser, you must take the exam in Hamilton Hall during a testing day for your score to count. You can only take the exam once per testing date.

The
Greenlee master’s program
is a 32-credit course of study culminating in a Master of Science (M.S.) degree in journalism and mass communication. Two tracks are available: one for students who desire specialized study in communication theory and research and one for students who wish to develop or strengthen their professional and strategic communication skills.
Within the master’s program, you will explore new ideas through a flexible curriculum that can be tailored to your individual interests and program of study. We will challenge your thinking and deepen your expertise to prepare you for a successful future.

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln is hosting
NewsTrain
on
Saturday, April 4
, a full day of digital journalism training on skills including smartphone video editing, data story generation, social media reporting, fact verification and mobile storytelling. In addition, anyone arriving on Friday, April 3, can participate in a free afternoon of Google tools training covering topics such as data visualization and maps. The cost is $85 and includes two light meals.
Discounted hotel rooms at the Graduate Lincoln hotel start at $99 a night. The last day to get the discounted hotel rate is March 12.
The sessions include:
- Using social media as powerful reporting tools,
- Storytelling on mobile: making smart choices,

Olivia Benjamin named Hugh Sidey Scholar
|
The White House Historical Association in partnership with the Greenlee School has awarded
Olivia Benjamin with the Hugh S. Sidey Scholarship in Print Journalism. Benjamin will receive $5,000 and an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. this spring. During her trip, she will attend the 2020 White House Correspondents' Dinner.

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is launching a new two-year academy for all LAS majors, where you can engage in online, face-to-face, and interactive activities to experience and develop an innovative and entrepreneurial mindset. We’ll even match you with a mentor in the second year, and you can emerge from the academy with a well-defined path to develop your big idea – or ideas you may have in the future!
The program is geared to first and second-year LAS majors. Participants must be enrolled in an LAS major and maintain a minimum 2.25 GPA.

Undergraduate Research Assistantship (URA) Program
|
The URA program encourages outstanding juniors and seniors to pursue graduate study by offering hands-on experience in a formal research environment. It assists students in making career decisions and in attaining info about graduate education and fellowships; helps them develop technical and specialized skills; and fosters qualities
To qualify for the URA Program students must:
- Be classified as juniors or seniors by the beginning of the term employed as a URA
- File the 2020-2021 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and be eligible for work study funding (be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen)
- Maintain an ISU cumulative GPA of at least 3.25
- Complete URA application (deadline of March 27 for interviewing)

Students required to activate multifactor authentication by March 25
|
Students are encouraged to activate the cybersecurity feature known as multifactor authentication (MFA) for their ISU login. MFA will be required for all students beginning March 25. Multifactor authentication is a two-step login system that requires an additional action after inputting your password. With MFA enabled, hackers cannot easily compromise your primary email account and other accounts routed through it (i.e. Amazon, Venmo, etc.). Visit
