 Greenlee News and Updates

Dear Greenlee students,

We are looking for students to share what the Greenlee School means to you.

The Greenlee School is an accredited school, which means that we meet the highest criteria for excellence in journalism and mass communication education. We are proud to have earned this distinction continuously since the accrediting process began in 1948.

Accredited schools are reviewed every six years, and this is our scheduled year. A national team of advertising, public relations and journalism and mass communication leaders will be on campus Oct. 31 and Nov. 1 to meet with faculty, alumni, university administrators and students just like you.

If you would like to be a part of this process, click on the link below to sign up for a slot. We welcome Greenlee students from all majors and all years.

There is nothing you need to do to prepare—just sign up, attend your student session, enjoy some snacks and answer questions based on your experience in the Greenlee School.

We hope you can join. Have a wonderful week.

Applications are now open for the 2023 Magazine Internship Program sponsored by the American Society of Magazine Editors. This 10-week (May 31-Aug. 11) program places college juniors in paid editorial positions with magazines and websites based in New York and Washington. Recent participants have worked at Advertising AgeFood Network MagazinePeopleReal SimpleFast Company and more.

Applicants should have completed their third year in college before June 2023 and expect to graduate in spring 2024. Only full-time students with a grade point average of at least 3.0 will be considered for an internship.

How to apply

The Greenlee School may recommend up to two students for the program. (Applicants recommended by journalism departments or career-guidance offices are given preference over students from the same school.)

To be considered for an official Greenlee School nomination, students must submit their applications to Maria Charbonneaux at mvcharb@iastate.edu by Monday, Nov. 14. To access the application, register on ASME’s website and log in. Save, but do not submit your answers or pay the processing fee at this time. Include your questions and answers along with all other required application documents in one PDF packet (minus the fee).

Greenlee School selections will be made the week of Nov. 14. You will be notified in time to upload and submit your complete application, including the Greenlee School's letter of nomination, and pay the $40 processing fee online before ASME’s Dec. 1 deadline.

We Lead: Empowerment and Leadership Conference, Oct. 29

We Lead gives Iowa State students the opportunity to hone their leadership skills, engage in interactive discussions and sessions, network with other leaders from campus and the community, and reflect on their own identities, leadership qualities, and strengths in their respective roles at Iowa State and beyond.

The theme for the conference is "Leadership Beyond" and will focus on the many ways that leadership can show up in our lives, especially for those with marginalized gender identities.

The event will feature a variety of sessions that will focus specifically on "Beyond the Binary," "Beyond #GirlBoss," and "Beyond Graduation," with a keynote address from Roberta Blevins, as seen in Amazon's docuseries "LulaRich" and heard on her podcast, "Life After MLM."

This event may be of particular interest to women (cis, trans, or otherwise), nonbinary individuals, non-gendered students, or those who are looking to engage in dialogue around gender and leadership.
