Greenlee students have earned top spots in five of the last six years of competition. The 2020 team of Avery Grundy and Kylie Kost participated virtually due to COVID-19 and finished as runners-up. Previous competitors have traveled to Washington, D.C. for a week of networking and the competition.

The Hugh S. Sidey Experience in Political Journalism is designed to jump-start the career of a student interested in political communication. The student selected for this award will receive a $5000 scholarship, an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C., and an invitation to join the White House Historical Association at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner to network with other political communicators and be included among the White House Historical Association scholarship winners honored at the dinner (if COVID-19 conditions allow for travel and events).

To apply, students will submit a 500-word essay. Applicants must be Greenlee School majors and have successfully completed JL MC 201 and who at the time of submission plan to spend at least one additional full semester at ISU before graduation. Essays are due at 5 p.m. on Dec. 1, 2020, to greenlee@iastate.edu. The recipient will be announced by the end of December 2020.

The Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication encourages Greenlee students to submit their best published work for consideration in the 2021 Hearst Journalism Awards competition. The program features competitions throughout the year in writing, photojournalism, audio, television, and multimedia, and the winning students are awarded scholarships and networking opportunities. As a participating school, Greenlee selects the two entrants per competition. The competitions are open to undergraduate journalism majors. An exception to the journalism major rule is made for students entering the photojournalism competitions. Submissions must have been disseminated in professional or student media while the student was an undergraduate.

The Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication awards over $100,000 in scholarships to its students annually.

To be considered for Greenlee School scholarships, students must submit the General and LAS College portions of the OneApp including the five designated Greenlee School questions in the LAS application portion.

The Greenlee master’s program is a 32-credit course of study culminating in a Master of Science (M.S.) degree in journalism and mass communication. Two tracks are available: one for students who desire specialized study in communication theory and research and one for students who wish to develop or strengthen their professional and strategic communication skills.

When: Monday, Dec. 7, 7-8:30 p.m.

Where: virtual via Zoom, hosted by Ames Public Library

What: Join us for a film discussion series centering on African Americans and their experiences. The Dec. 7 discussion will focus on Moonlight. Participants will watch each film on their own time using the Library's free Kanopy streaming service. Then, join a live virtual conversation facilitated by Dr. Novotny Lawrence from ISU's Greenlee School of Journalism and Communication and the Department of English.

Prior to the fall semester, students who were at increased risk for severe illness of COVID-19 (as defined by the CDC) were encouraged to complete a form to assist with accommodations through Student Accessibility Services and additional campus resources. Students who completed the form for fall semester don’t need to complete it again. However, students who did not previously self-identify or who are new should complete the form via this Dean of Students Office website by Dec. 4.

The university is now offering Greenlee students access to Adobe software on their laptops for the remainder of the Fall semester at no cost. To receive your student license and download the software, please complete this form. These licenses will expire near the end of the fall semester. A similar option will be available for students who need access to Abode software for the spring semester and those details we be shared at a later date.

Becca McDowell and Anna Anker, University of Iowa-Des Moines Master of Social Work (MSW) students, are looking for participants of a survey that is a requirement of their Research Practice I & II class regarding COVID-19 responses and life circumstances among college students. They are trying to reach the voices of college students across Iowa. It should take about 10-15 minutes to complete. Complete the survey here.

Applications are now open for the Magazine Internship Program sponsored by the American Society of Magazine Editors. This 10-week program places rising college seniors at magazines in New York and Washington. 

Recent participants have worked at ESSENCE, Food Network Magazine, HGTV Magazine, Martha Stewart Living, Men's Health, National Geographic, People, Rachael Ray Every Day, Women's Health and more. Iowa State students have been selected in the recent past, interning with The Knot, The Forward and Inc. Magazine.

Now that it’s getting cold, don't forget about the indoor on-campus study spaces available. Check out this list of classrooms open for studying during designated hours. No need to reserve space. Room capacities are posted.

Hours: The library will not be open 24/7 this semester during prep week and finals week; normal business hours will be maintained.

Mindful Moments: The library and Student Health and Wellness present Mindful Moments, a series of socially distanced wellness activities, including meditation, yoga and journaling/doodling. Experts will help students decompress each day during Prep Week. 

Snacks for students: The library will offer coffee and individually packaged snacks on first floor.

You may get tested for COVID-19 prior to leaving for winter break – even if you don’t feel sick. Asymptomatic testing will be offered at Johnny’s in Hilton Coliseum. Testing will be available by appointment only, Nov. 16 – 21. Online scheduling is open; book your appointment now to secure a spot. You must also complete the pre-testing questionnaire. Test Iowa is also an option. The clinic located at the ISU Research Park (2503 South Loop Drive) is available by appointment by calling 800-866-3492. Other locations can be found on the Test Iowa website.

The Students Helping Our Peers (SHOP) food pantry is open for the fall semester in its new location — 1306 Beyer Hall. Hours are Tuesday and Friday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Wednesday, 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. SHOP will also be open on Tuesday and Fridays throughout winter break, excluding university holidays. Volunteer opportunities are available.
