Discuss Greenlee's true crime podcast
Who: Students from JL MC 390L: Cold Case Journalism and Associate Prof. Tracy Lucht
What: Greenlee Investigates Launch and Listen Event
When: Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2022
Where: 172 Hamilton and on Zoom: https://iastate.zoom.us/j/5147752281

Please join us Wednesday, Jan. 26, when students will discuss a cold case investigation they completed in fall 2021 as part of an entrepreneurial course in cold case journalism. All are welcome – students, faculty and anyone with a passion for true crime journalism. Students interested in taking JL MC 390L in fall 2022 are especially encouraged to attend.

JL MC 390L introduces students to cold case journalism, which uses investigative reporting to uncover the facts of an unsolved crime (or series of crimes) and lays out those facts with compelling storytelling. The course offers students an opportunity to develop investigative skills and information literacy by finding and working with public documents and data, interviewing sources, weaving information into a narrative and publishing stories in various formats. Students research an unsolved case and report their findings using forms of multimedia journalism chosen to best tell the story.

In fall 2021, the course began with a series of reading assignments and guest speakers representing different perspectives, including victims, law enforcement and investigative journalists. The latter portion of the semester was dedicated to an immersive project. Students came up with a name for their group, wrote a mission statement and reflected on their purpose.

Sheila Jean Collins
Then they decided to investigate the case of Sheila Jean Collins, an Iowa State student who caught a ride home on Jan. 26, 1968, and was later found dead. Using primary and secondary sources, investigative files and interviews, the class pieced together a timeline and several theories about what might have happened to Sheila.

Where can you listen to the podcast?
The class produced five episodes of a podcast, available here and on Spotify, Audible and Google Podcasts. Other students wrote stories and produced web content, which they submitted to the Iowa State Daily.

Why Jan. 26?
We have chosen this week to discuss the project because Jan. 26 will mark 54 years since Sheila Collins was last seen on the corner of Beach and Lincoln Way. Tracy Lucht has asked several students from the class to form a panel to talk about the project.
Publishing for Mobile Devices
JL MC 317: Publishing for Mobile Devices (3 cr)
TR 3:10-5:25

What exactly is Publishing for Mobile Devices? It’s a way to merge digital content with traditional print.

In this 3 credit course, you’ll learn how to incorporate video, animation, web content, live maps and more into your publications and to prepare those publications for display on phones and tablets all in a team-based environment.

For the Spring 2022 offering, we will be using information gathered in the Fall 2021 JL MC 414X course to build an interactive map of ISU and the surrounding area to create an in-depth, multimedia-enhanced exploration of race in our community, both historical and contemporary. Because of the cross-course focus, the JL MC 316 prereq will be waived for this offering.

If you have additional questions, please contact Sherry Berghefer (slbergh@iastate.edu).
Call for art!
This February from the 21st-28th, LAS-Multicultural Student Success and Design-Multicultural Student Success will be hosting an art exhibit to celebrate Black artists and Black-centered art from students around campus.

Art submissions officially began on Jan. 3 and can include any medium of your choice. The exhibit will be held in the College of Design gallery and include an opening reception later in the week (date and time TBD) where artists can share details about their work(s) and anyone interested in submitting performance art can perform live. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please contact Lexi Dant (las_adant@iastate.edu).
CANCELLED - ISU Health and Wellness Symposium

Attend the NLGJA student conference
With less than two months left until the kickoff of the 2022 Student Conference (Feb. 25-26), we wanted to give you a sneak peek of what’s in store!

This two day virtual event is going to be filled with opportunities to learn from some of the top experts in the industry. The field of journalism can look intimidating to those just starting out, but this conference is designed to give students and young professionals a leg up with deep learning sessions, one-on-one resume reviews, networking rooms and more. Register here!

Here are a few of the sessions that attendees can look forward to:

One-on-One Resume, Reel and Portfolio Critiques
Students can sign up for a personalized resume, reel and portfolio review with an established industry professional. Experts with hiring experience in print and broadcast journalism will be available to give tailored feedback to students. They’ll review how students can tailor their work samples to the kinds of jobs they’re looking for, select the best examples of their skills and keep in mind what hiring managers are looking for. Registration for this session will be available soon so keep an eye on your inbox for more information!

Is Journalism School Right for Me?
In this session covering J-School, students will hear from speakers on what to expect when pursuing a higher degree in journalism. We’ll demystify the application process, discuss alternative career and education paths, and hear from higher education professionals whether attending J-School may be the right choice for you.

Navigating Outness and Identity in the Newsroom
We hear recruiters say, “bring your whole self,” to work, but that can be easier said than done. As queer journalists, how can we stay true to ourselves in a newsroom that might be hostile to us? In this session, attendees will hear from established journalists about how they approach their work with authenticity and integrity.

Internship and Job Fair
Searching for the next step in your career? Looking for a Summer or Fall internship? Introduce yourself to recruiters from top newsrooms, universities and journalism organizations, and learn about their available internships and career opportunities.

Don’t miss out on these great sessions - register today!

Registration is free for NLGJA: The Association of LGBTQ Journalists Student Members. Students who are not members and wish to participate may register for $25. Registration is available here.
Hearst explanatory reporting competition deadlines
Rolling deadlines continue throughout the spring semester.

The selected entrants must be current undergraduate journalism majors at the time the article is published. An exception is made for spring, summer or fall 2021 graduates, allowing them to enter the contests in the 2021-2022 program year. The entries must have been published before students were graduated.

Entries must have been disseminated in a campus or professional publication or website. If the entry was published in an off-campus publication, a letter from the editor is required verifying that the entry is student work with minimal editing and no editor rewriting.

Students can submit their entries to Erin Wilgenbusch at egw@iastate.edu.
Student podcast producers still wanted
LAS Multicultural Student Success is seeking Greenlee students to produce a new podcast titled “Black and Brown at the Cardinal and Gold,” focused on profiling students of color within LAS. This interview series will be hosted by Arnold Woods, Director of Multicultural Student Success for LAS, and will highlight the brilliant multicultural students within the college and their stories of how they came to Iowa State. The series will provide a space for LAS students of color to reflect on their journeys, share what inspires and motivates them, and speak on relevant and important topics.

Producers will be responsible for planning, editing and promoting the podcast. Producers should be knowledgeable, or willing to learn, audio producing and editing. Those skills would include recording in a studio and editing files to put together an engaging, educational and entertaining podcast. The producers will also be involved in promoting the podcast, including interacting with a hosting site, delivering the podcast to popular aggregators and creating additional materials such as show notes and background information.

Interested students can APPLY HERE. Questions can be directed to Arnold Woods (aawoods@iastate.edu) or Kelly Winfrey (kwinfrey@iastate.edu).
